This is my personal Mastodon instance. I would highly urge you all to set up your own when/if you can. (The process is currently relatively uncomplicated for developers but not for people without technical knowledge.)
The danger, of course, is that a large company with lots of money will start a Mastodon node just like Google did with Gmail (Gastodon?)
Mastodon is an amazing effort and I’m glad it exists. Our next challenge is decentralising at the scale of the individual, not the community.
@aral What about the Local timeline then?
@slvn There are definitely optimisations that can be implemented for personal instances.
@aral Out of curiosity, how/where are you hosting it?
@codydh I used the Scalingo installer (so scaling.io). See https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon#deployment-on-scalingo
(And do a search for scalingo on Mastodon’s Github issues for some of my notes until I’ve had a chance to submit some pull requests.)
@aral Thanks! What instance size is working for you? I'd love to do this but am concerned that the instance will only grow over time, requiring more and more $/month to maintain.
@ekaitz_zarraga @aral Works great :)
@brunoscheele Yep, sure does :) @ekaitz_zarraga
@aral For that to happen, we would need an installation image or procedure, which is incredibly easy and straightforward. Perhaps an RPi image would do?
@aral it would be great if someone made some walk through videos / step by step tutorials for how install an instance. maybe these are out there already?
@inso I'll look them up, thanks. What's their Mastodon handle?
@inso @aral @nemsia Yes, working process here https://github.com/magikcypress/mastodon_ynh
@aral only easy if you have your own server and domain, right?
@aral You have actually reminded me that Google Wave existed
@aral
Welcome ;-)
We, Framasoft and the KITTENS network (https://chatons.org) are providing ~10 Mastodon instances at this time. Hope that it will continue to grow :)
Let's https://ungooglize.org the Net one app at a time :)
@aral What kind of setup are you using? AWS? VPS how powerful is it? Are you anticipating how much storage-needs can grow?
I'm considering my own instance but then when I think about how I will eventually have to store even the federated messages, it may clogged my cheap VPS very quickly...
@aral That's why it mastodon is federation and not decentralisation :)
@aral I'll definitely look into setting up my own instance. As the techie in the family, I'll also provide accounts for my tribe :)
@woozong Awesome :)
do you think it makes sense to link up mastadon with twitter, does that help to decentralize twitter ? I can't think this through @aral
@aral OK, I'm seeing this from mastodon.cloud.
