"For Wu, who has written extensively about today’s #attentioneconomy and how #platforms like #Facebook and #Google make money by aggregating large amounts of attention and selling it to the highest bidder, design is what sets the terms of any online interaction–he calls it the “agenda-setter.” But instead of helping users achieve their goals, #design often is used to exploit their weaknesses."

@josemurilo That’s what I call “decoration”.

Decoration is when you take an inherently unethical business model (like Google/Facebook/the startup du jour’s) and use behavioural psychology, aesthetics, and storytelling to mask the acrid smell/taste/sight of that rotten core so your victim—the livestock to be farmed (called “the user” in Silicon Valley)—does not become aware of it & bolt.

Design is when you use the same skills to make tools that empower people and do nothing else.
