Ready for my talk for the design/development students at Howest.
Will be showing a very early proof of concept of Small Web server setup for the first time.
3PM Belgian time.
Watch live at:
If you missed it, you can watch the recording here:
(Skip the first two minutes it you don’t want to hear my Vimeo rant as they had me scrambling at the last minute to set up a new stream. Not sure if it’s busted on Firefox on Linux or what.)
@aral I agree there is a power / money balance problem, people just don't get the fediverse or the issues we have with facebook/ google et al
@zleap @wouter No reason why certain types of Small Web places shouldn’t federate on public data if they want to but it’s not a core part of the problem we’re trying to solve. The topology is very different: single-tenant vs multi-tenant. By going single-tenant we get to simplify certain things dramatically. That simplicity will translate to usability.
@aral Great demo! I really like the studio setup you have made and I think you'll quickly work out the kinks with Vimeo and audio feedback.
I was wondering if you happened to catch the test stream for https://owncast.online owncast?
It's... it fits RIGHT in with small tech... mind you streaming/transcoding CAN get cpu intensive...
but several users of yunohost were there, hoping someone might be able to get it set up on yunohost...
Nonetheless I thought of you during the broadcast, this seems... useful (:
@aral just watching your recording, thanks, also It makes me feel good when live streams have issues, its been a mad semester doing similar things with students on campus and remote... and also having last minute stressed ... Ive more gear coming but no where near as good a set up as you, doubled down on more mindful stuff to try and deal with it 👍 loving the overlay graphics... one day ill catch up with your awesome set up
@adamprocter Overlay graphics = greenscreen key (in Atem Mini Pro, triggered using a macro tied to a Streamdeck key via Companion app) of specially-prepared Keynote presentation ;)
@aral watched it all and loved it! Thanks Aral for doing this once again. It’s great to see your projects progressing. Small Web is very exciting together with SiteJS and other bits. Keep up with that good work you two!
Love the way the presentation blended in seamlessly, and the whole "stack" looks like it's really going somewhere, even to my non-webdev eyes. I hope that this will come wrapped in a friendly GUI at some point. One button to set up a personal facebooky page, plus a few other templates for the accordingly inclined
Also liked the shenanigans from the students, they were definitely enjoying themselves :) Just the one person at the end was overdoing it a little...
@Mr_Teatime Thanks! And yes, that’s the goal.
(Also, I don’t think that was a student; it was open for all to watch) :)
Another thing, which might be a purely academic point: I don't think you'd have lost if users knew what asymmetric encryption is.
In fact, I think that understanding how something works under the hood /to some degree/ is immensely helpful in deciding whether to trust it, and to distinguish it from magic, or snake-oil.
Technology I like to use does not require me to understand how it works, but makes it easy to understand it anyway.
@aral This is completely besides the point, but it looked like you had an emoji picker in your top bar, is that what the smiley face with the disclosure triangle was?
I've been looking for a good way to input emoji on Linux for ages now and I haven't found anything better than the "Characters" application.
@aral Thanks for the presentation. Any chance of getting to play with your create-site script? Would like to test it out on my own domain if possible.
@der_On Hey Ondrej, it’s hardcoded with our Hetzner, DNSimple, etc., details right now specifically for small-web.org. Did you want to test it out as in play with Site.js in a small web domain or use it with your own VPS provider, domain name, etc. (None of those are supported at the moment; it’s just a proof of concept) :)
@aral As I'm using Hetzner too I would actually like to see if I can get it working with my Domain. Not sure if you can publish it in the current state.
