“How does one hate a country, or love one? … I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply?”

— Ursula K. Le Guin (The Left Hand of Darkness)

@aral @neil This is true... but I guess I might not be fully agreeing to that also. There are countries that are expressing a certain culture. It is not about hate though. It is about how one can relate and resonate to that culture or not. And also, you may have been born in a country and not relating to the culture attached to it.
Thanks for the toot Aral.

@globcoco @neil I believe Ursula’s point is that if those borders didn’t exist, the need to conform to certain expectations may not either. As a third-culture kid, I hear you. And yet I also know in my heart that the world could be a far more accepting place than it is today if we just make it so.

@aral @neil I can see your point now... And hers as well. Yes you are right. The construct of frontiers as it is being made now has been creating quite a lot of harm and violence... Ok I really get your point. Thanks for bringing that up.

@globcoco @aral To me also it is pointing to the idea that most national boundaries are quite geographically arbitrary yet used to invoke identity based on nothing other than geocoordinates.

@neil @aral
Yes... I remember 5 or 6 years ago there were this decision (in France) to bring some areas together...
it was (is) very arbitrary but clearly quite political. And of course, everything was (is) coming as well under the governance of one place (Paris)
Parallel to that, some wanted to define another approach which was more based on interdependance...
I am looking for the map to show that. I can't find it... yet.

@neil @globcoco @aral countries are just things that annoying humans made up. All other animals, birds and insects don't bother with that crap.

@harrysentonbury @neil @globcoco @aral maybe not in the form of presidents and parliaments, but it would be a mistake to say animals didn't have a concept of territory

@globcoco @harrysentonbury @neil @aral and even if most animals are vicious little assholes, it doesn't mean that humans have to be as well

@antifaoverlord @globcoco @harrysentonbury @neil To be fair, you’d be hard pressed to find greater “viscous little assholes” than humans. Case in point: Earth, circa 2021 AD :)

@aral @antifaoverlord @harrysentonbury @neil
I actually replied "Definitely doesn't have to be but clearly we have been!"

@aral EU may not be perfect, but it seems like it's possible border forces to not check me, and restrict freedom of movement
