Apple is throwing away an absolute competitive advantage over Google (https://ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/). To wit: it doesn’t have an absolute competitive advantage on performance, screen resolution, …, not even usability and experience.
I’d really love to know what exactly the US government (see https://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2019/10/william-barr-and-winnie-pooh) has threatened them with to make a trillion-dollar company like Apple with a fiduciary duty to its shareholders announce (and then double-down on) this decision.
@aral This is one of the things I keep telling the "but Apple is just as bad as Google" voices that chime in on my posts, but It's becoming a harder and harder position to hold because of some of these business decisions (that honestly make no sense -- clearly there's some context I'm missing behind the scenes)
