Finding myself on public WiFi for the first time since the start of the pandemic makes me remember how much I love Wireguard (https://www.wireguard.com/) and AzireVPN (https://azirevpn.com).
A breeze to set up on elementary OS (or any other Linux + they have apps for all the major platforms):
sudo apt install wireguard jq resolvconf

I personally prefer @mullvadnet, because they also use wireguard and have extensive guides to how to privacy on their website. Also you can pay your access anonymously.

I host a Pleroma instance on Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 CPU's, 4GB RAM and 30GB disk.
As VPS the same would cost 20-40 € monthly. The Raspberry Pi I got for around 100€ here in Sweden.
Pleroma has proven to be very solid.
I have Freedombox too but there the integration with Raspberry Pi is very bad, they don't like Raspberry Pi's because they are not Free Software.
