@aral … That story is bizarre. Ma Bell would happily have done all that and more if they had computers that could parse speech back then, and the wiretapping laws hadn't prevented it (and they still did it for ONI, NSA, etc.) They sold call metadata to advertisers in the Yellow Pages and reverse lookup to law enforcement and anyone who could fork over a few thousand $. Google are amateur villains compared to Ma Bell, they just have better computers.
@mdhughes Yeah, it does have a bit of the “surveillance capitalism isn’t really capitalism vibe” to it. But heck, anything that gets people thinking about these things these days…
