How Web 2.0 killed the Internet
I wrote this eight years ago. It’s just as timely today given that some folks are pushing a rose-tinted version of things.
“Open APIs” in Web 2.0 were open in the same way that a gate is open in that it can be closed and locked whenever the owner of the gate desires.
They were never open in the sense of an open field that no one can enclose because it belongs to us all. That second sense is what we refer to when we speak of freedom.
