A privacy conference sponsored by Google and Meta is like a healthcare conference sponsored by Phillip Morris or a climate change conference sponsored by ExxonMobil. In other words, it is bullshit.

No. I went once and there were the good guys there. It was very interesting, Gafam were pretty well "attacked". The environment was good, really smart folks and great discussions.
@veroandi See the bit about the people who are fine with letting Google and Meta launder their reputations using their legitimacy.
It’s *worse* if “the good guys” are there. That says “we think it‘s perfectly fine for Google and Meta to sponsor a privacy conference. There’s nothing wrong with that. Look, I’m here, aren’t I? I’m a Good Guy™ So if I’m here, Google and Meta cannot be that bad. I wouldn’t go to a healthcare conference sponsored by Philip Morris, of course, but here I am…
@aral @veroandi Upcoming #RightsCon has this problem too.
@spoon @veroandi Yep. See this from eight years ago 🤷♂️ https://ar.al/notes/rightscon-or-a-right-con/
@aral Aral, buddy, there were no need for "in other words". Those analogies were much simpler than plainly calling them bull shit. That's how fucked up they are.
@arh You’d be surprised how many people seem to need it spelled out for them :) If you’d only heard some of the conversations I’ve had with people over the years…
@aral damn…
@aral More like the Evil Corp board … funny, like "philanthropy", it's money laundering 🤔
@aral
I'm going to throw up
