If Britain gets any warmer it might colonise itself.

@aral I recall reading a 1930s edition of "A short history of England", brazenly stating this about India: "English children cannot live there". Presumably due to the heat.

@aral my crackpot theory is that global warming is the theft of the weather of the south and the norths mythology of it, by the north. makes no sense but still.

@aral Britain wasn’t the first empire and it won’t be the last. It was just the most efficient. And never forget the first rule of empires: if you don’t create your own empire you are destined to be part of someone else’s.

@TheThirdMan Wow, this might be the first time I’ve seen someone bootlick an entire empire. 👀

@TheThirdMan PS. We can do better than empires. No, scratch that, we MUST do better than empires.

@aral I'm sure we can also do better than a three-class system of society but I've yet to see one. Some countries, such as Australia, may claim to be classless but that's just delusional. As long as the poor keep believing it then the rich will be happy. The middle class will keep bumbling along with their continuous supply of baubles and distractions and not even notice.

@aral Better get your eye sight checked. I ain't bootlicking anything, I'm simply pointing out the realities of life. From the first moment that early humans climbed down from the trees we started looking for more space and took what we found. Good luck changing human nature.

@TheThirdMan “Human nature” is a self-fulfilling prophecy. There was a time when people couldn’t imagine a society not run by the Church. A time when we couldn’t imagine a society without slavery. A time when you’d be laughed out to the room if you posited that men and women were equal. (And those “times” still exist in certain places even today.)

Instead of succumbing to fatalism, I’d rather try and nudge things towards the kind of world I want to live in. Whether we succeed or not… 🤷‍♂️

@aral Don't get me started on slavery. We'll be here for days.
