Teachers back call for restoration of eviction ban

irishtimes.com/ireland/educati

This government is an abject failure and an embarrassment and the housing situation in Ireland is untenable. I’d say it’s at the point where the should be getting involved on grounds.

Shackle people to the whims of banks and landlords… what’s the worst that could happen?

Ireland in 2023, that’s what.

@aral Uh.. beep... :(

I weep for a country I have never been to

@aral Same story everywhere, unfortunately. And the landlords just keep making more money and buying more dwellings where they raise the rent to make more money and on the vicious cycle goes. Affordable housing has always been a result of governments intervening and not "markets"....

@aral @EU_Commission #Husing in #Ireland is just absurdly overpriced.

A friend of mine pays like €1.500 p.m. for a room in a suburb.

For comparison: You might get 2 vedroom rooftop apartment in the Center of Cologne for that.

@aral @EU_Commission But maybe it's because most cities in Germany had (until 20 years ago) public-owned and/or cooperative housing & development forms that were solely founded post-WW2 to build affordable housing for the masses.

@kkarhan @EU_Commission Not only overpriced but also practically unavailable.

I just checked the Daft app (yes, the main property app/site here is called “daft”) and this is the one and only property currently available for rent in the city of Kilkenny. We have a population of over 26,000.

@aral @kkarhan @EU_Commission It's impossible to buy a house in Ireland even in a good job. The only political parties proposing any sort of solutions are Sinn Féin and PBP and housing is becoming a very strong vote winner. I think there's going to be a nasty shock for the establishment at the next General Election. I hate SF but I will be voting for them over this, it's the single biggest problem in our society.

@aral

That's horrendous. That's more than I pay for the mortgage on my 4 bed detached in Northern Ireland. House prices up here are the cheapest in the UK I think.

@kkarhan @EU_Commission

@aral I thought the issue with teachers (or rather, the lack of support for them) was only an American problem lately. It makes me sad that other countries face some of the same issues. In this case, enough to making an everyday living wage for one of the hardest and most important jobs on this planet.

I know great teachers that are leaving the profession because of many reasons (that you can imagine) in this current society and we have to ask ourselves “Can we blame them?!?!”.
