@sll @aral unpopular opinion: I'm starting to get annoyed about all this forced labeling. The world is a range of skin shades and deciding what is white and what isn't is arbitrary in many cases, even more so with an increasingly number of mixed ethnicities kids.
The only thing that should count is the nationality.
@s1m0n4 @sll Well, it all counts – it’s a very privileged position to be able to say “skin colour doesn’t matter.” If I’m in the US and I get pulled over by a cop, I don’t wonder if I’m going to survive the experience as a white-presenting person whereas that’s going to be at the forefront of a Black person’s mind. And we’re no better here in Europe either. Our societies are systemically and institutionally racist and our privileges derive from historic and current subjugation.
@aral @sll privilege has many different variations though. A black woman isn't stopped by the police as often as a black man. Mind you I'm not denying prejudice, but this privilege everyone talks about is nuanced by many factors. If you're good looking, the ethnicity doesn't matter because you'll likely get less everyday life discrimination. Most people are nice to you. As a counter example if you're a white and fat woman, good luck getting a first job.
