@djoerd @osf For the latter, regulation. For that, in turn, tackling the problem of institutional corruption – lobbying and revolving doors – that make such regulation difficult to draft and execute.
Ideally, we’d be funding alternatives that don’t rely on advertising from the commons, for the common good. (I’m not holding my breath.)
Until then, some of us are scraping together such alternatives with little budget/support… maybe some of those will make a difference 
@aral Regulation: Yes! But until that happens... In fact, the @osf *is* developing an alternative that does not rely on ads, for the common good. Suppose the @osf successfully supplies search that rivals Bing/Google. It would be ironic (mildly put) if the likes of Ecosia, Duckduckgo, Qwant, Startpage, etc. would stick with their search providers because that is where the advertisements are...
