@blacklight I’m so sorry. But as someone who left the UK when Brexit even became a possibility, I’m not sure anywhere is perfect and I get the feeling we’re all going to have to make a stand somewhere at some point.
That said, if you end up considering Ireland just let me know if I can help in any way.
@aral Ireland sounds like an interesting option - especially for those of us in the NL who are already used to wind and rain
@blacklight Yeah, but you’re also used to having tenant’s rights.
Me and mine are also trying to flee Brexit Island but found it impossible to secure housing in Ireland. Not defeated, but certainly licking wounds at the moment.
@L0wKey @blacklight It’s really bad.
Your best bet, if you can, is to buy. There is no rental market to speak of (unless you want to go with one of the really high-priced corporate landlords in Dublin. To be fair, they’re also the only ones you’d be guaranteed any length of occupancy with as long as you keep paying them. With private landlords, if you can find one, you could be out on your tush at any time).
If I can help in any way do let me know.
We were looking to buy but without employment it would be cash only which obviously put a ceiling on affordability. Anything we looked at was gone in hours (or uninhabitable) - we came over twice to view and literally while travelling 80% of the properties we were to see had gone.
UK financial turmoil has meant the whole endeavour is now unaffordable in the short term so it’ll be a couple of years before we can try again I’d guess.
Hope delayed but not dead (yet)
@L0wKey @blacklight I hear you.
Due to the interest rate hikes (likely) it does seem like things have slowed down a bit. House we’re buying in Bray was on for several months, went sale agreed, buyer pulled out, and now we’re about to close (it’s nothing to write home about but the location is good and it’s not crumbling and has a decent energy rating so that’s actually pretty good by Irish standards. And I won’t mention the purple kitchen cabinets… )
