@samir Not your fault. The only fault here is with an organisation that makes itself out to be something it is not and preys on the goodwill of decent people.

@aral So, we're back to the browser question, I guess. What shall we do? I'm very reluctant to go for anything google-based. And Safari is somewhat clumsy. Stop using the internet is not an option. Is there any new browser on the horizon?

@viennawriter Nope. Not unless we fund one from the commons for the common good.

@aral Fine. How do we fund one, then? We need a team of good human developers with manners and ethics, who love to build a browser kernel with decent security and privacy integrated from the ground. And money to pay them decently.

@viennawriter As an independent organisation funded with our taxes, ideally.

@aral Would we need a new one or could that be a job for FSF or FSFE? Europe would be nice because of the privacy standards here …

@viennawriter Ideally, a new organisation, specifically for that purpose.

@viennawriter @aral Fully agree but would be surprised if @fsfe would want to go into software development at that scale.

It good thing is there are already half a dozen #Firefox-based forks out there with communities around them that could build an independent foundation.

So it's really mostly a funding question. Looking at #NLnet and @NGIZero and of course things like the @sovtechfund :)

@viennawriter @aral We don't have to start from scratch, we can fork Firefox and Thunderbird. But the problem is where to find the money to sustain the development that isn't Big Tech or VC. And what kind of body should govern the development? How is elected? Etc. Someone with experience should step in.

@viennawriter
There are plenty of forks of Firefox still, which are fine for now, if you're strictly against Mozilla. But it will be harder to keep against the upstream later, likely. It's still lesser of the evils.

You can try Palemoon tho, but it will suck if you're used to too modern web. Ladybird project is promising, but it's in rather early stage, but they have some funding already and full-time employees.

@veclavtalica Thanks! These are probably all viable options for me and I'll have a look into those. Thanks! Still I need something I can tell my parents to install. But yes ... Will take a bit of time, it seems.

What is the use of changing the browser?

From my perspective the problem is that Mozilla spends/wastes money on shitty things like metaverse and AI which is missing for maintaining the browser. And this will not change if less are using the browser. And forked browsers will suffer from a suffering Firefox, too.

OTHO I'm not supporting Mozilla since I can not support "Firefox development" (and nothing else). [To be frank: other reason is that there is no IBAN.]
@viennawriter @veclavtalica

@viennawriter @aral Servo is the best (not perfect, just best) potential option I know of but it's a long way from ready for daily use.

@aral I kept hoping they'd pull out, especially after the many complaints about LLM integration in MDN, but it keeps getting worse.

@aral urgh why can't they make just a good browser like in the past.. they have fallen so much...

@aral thanks for reminding me I’ve got some Central American loans to underwrite over at Kiva.org.

@aral
As often happens, I must have been confused.

@aral I was wondering if my MDN Plus subscription was possibly being used this way. While investigating I saw that they are upselling people to MDN Plus by offering ad removal (?!) and ai chat bot features. Here are their own words, which don’t preclude what you’re suggesting at all:
> MDN Plus has been built only with Mozilla resources, and any revenue generated by MDN Plus will stay within Mozilla.

@aral it probably makes more sense to send your #Mozilla foundation donations to @servo to help them get their #Verso browser out the door. #browsers #firefox
