Why did (does) anyone buy into guff like blockchain? Most get-rich-quick scams are simple, because they only work on simpletons. To even understand what blockchain is, you have to have a few dozen connected live neurons. I'd have expected that to be enough to make people think, "Oh, hey, this is for fools, not me!"

But that's not how it went.
