“Meta is now automatically muting all posts that mention PixelFed, so its users can’t read about any alternatives to its services.”

But I’m confused… Mastodon gGmbH and Meta Platforms, Inc. are besties according to Mastodon gGmbH CEO.¹
There must be some mistake.
¹ https://www.platformer.news/mastodon-interview-eugen-rochko-meta-bluesky-threads-federation/
it's almost like they are, what do we call them, useful something or another
@big_louse It’s on the tip of my tongue, if only I could think of the word…
@spla It’s an opaque box so who knows.
@spla @aral its a bit more complex than a search term - they make it algorithmically difficult to find posts and have them presented to you.
For example, I like men and cats, the more posts I like that fall in this category I get more of that in my feed.
Muting can be full, as in you can't find anything or flooding your timeline with anything but, thus killing any potential traffic from people who maybe interested in the topic.
As Aral said, it's an opaque box
@aral "Federation" my butt...
@aral making it hard to find infos on a competing product? That has be illegal ... #meta #pixelfed #fediverse #threads
@aral Website boy doesn't like pixelfed either, I guess?
@aral
They don't block mentions of Mastodon. What's your point?
@EcoLogicExplorer @aral if they don't block mentions to Mastodon but they do block mentions to Pixelfed, that's an even larger fuck-up as they're going after smaller projects, smaller indie developers that don't have the power to fight back.
@aral Just a little misunderstanding between besties, for sure.
A bug, a mistake, some bad intern writing bad code, a communist sabotage of a match made in heavens.
Bah. Things are simply going according to plan. Their plan, of course.
@aral
That is surprising. Not that they are doing it, but that they are doing it this early.
Threads was supposed to be them pretending to be friendly with the fediverse, and they've barely started convincing people of that.
@leeloo @aral
No, no. Threads is them trying to capture disaffected Twitter users who hate Elon. Integration with the Fediverse is almost certainly a bad-faith attempt to dance around EU anti-monopoly regulations.
They're attempting to letter-of-the-law it.
Nothing about this is playing nice. It's entirely about using Mastodon -- and Mastodon specifically, not the Fediverse -- as a legal s hield.
@aral
Thv problem with corporate social media is not that they are necessarily evil, though some are, but that their allegiance is not to their customers but their share price and if evil earns more money they will choose evil.
@aral i still visit facebook about once a month to check on family. A friend of mine posted a screenshot from Mastodon and I commented that it was really cool that were using it. They friend PM'd me to ask me more about how to use it and then suddenly my messages stopped getting thru.
@aral I highly doubt that Meta is willingly banning mentions of Pixelfed, it does not make any sense at all. I am curious of what is happening here, but why would they even care? There is probably a explanation here that does not involve a conspiracy.
And also we (Mastodon) have some discussions with Meta (and other implementors do as well), this does not mean we are "besties" or have any insights on what they do (or that they have any influence on us)
@briankrebs
@renchap @aral @briankrebs Some indication at least in these tests that Meta isn't hiding mentions of Pixelfed. https://todon.eu/@teamtoot@toot.wales/112133828533785201
@aral I fail to see what any of this has to do with Gargron or Mastodon unless you're just shit-stirring for clicks.
@stinerman Because Mastodon rolled out the red carpet. But sure, I’m just shit-stirring for clicks. I’ll save you from wasting any more of yours.
@aral sounds like the kind of friends who take your lunch money
@aral He's also been busily god-modding to eliminate civilly-expressed opinions against the Gaza genocide, and those who express them. Whether you (the reader of this post) agree with the people who expressed those opinions or not… remember that he's portraying Mastodon as an alternative to censored corporate social media, and not for sale.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them. (And for my money, view any new "updates" he pushes down the pipeline with suspicion.)
