“CEO Jim McNerney…repeatedly invoked a slur…Those who cared too much about the integrity of the planes and not enough about the stock price were “phenomenally talented assholes,” and he encouraged his deputies to ostracize them into leaving…He initially refused to let nearly any of these talented assholes work on the 787 Dreamliner, instead outsourcing…development…The plan would save money while busting unions, a win-win, he promised investors.”

The American Prospect · Suicide MissionWhat Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane

@Loukas @aral in Boeings case, we all have an opportunity to take a ride

@aral

Is this what oil companies have in store for the whole planet? 😬

@aral

It looks like Boeing's current management sees quality control as a cost, and so must remove as much quality control as possible in order to reduce costs:

"...McNerney’s henchmen began targeting anyone with experience and knowledge for torment and termination. ... A quality control engineer named John Woods was terminated for insisting inspectors thoroughly document damage and repair performed on composite materials, which were far less resilient than steel."

No wonder their planes have doors and wheels falling off in mid-air, or are falling out of the sky. Boeing is apparently deliberately stripping itself of skills?

@FediThing It’s ok, the people making those decisions fly private. It’s us plebs who end up dying.

@aral Too bad Boeing couldn’t hire OceanGate’s people. Sounds like they’d be a good corporate fit.

@aral

Who cares about physics or engineering?

It's not as if they're building giant flying machines that carry passengers, or anything.

@aral Anyone here ever getting on a Boeing aircraft ever again?

@megatronicthronbanks Not if I can help it, no. Definitely not the newer ones.

@aral What kind of asshole thinks people who are diligent about safety are assholes?

(This is a rhetorical question.)

@aral Quite by accident, I have found that some managers respond to describing quality checks and safety inspections as 'the paperwork that keeps the CTO out of prison' can change attitudes in several layers in the company in one go. Most project managers seem to realise that if the CTO is going to be incarcerated, they are going down with them.

@aral When people warn about the MBA set gutting companies and running them into the wall of enshittification, this is the sort of thing they mean.

@aral In that case anyone still holding shares needs to shed them before the value goes to zero, as it inevitably will (unless there is a buy-out and the whole management is replaced). A management ‘poisoned’ by a rogue CEO can (almost) never regain a proper management system that can recover the company to profitability.
