I am not pro-Palestine or anti-Israel. This isn’t a football game between two equally-matched teams where you support your favourite. I am anti-genocide and Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people.
@SHODAN Go away.
@aral what astounded me is how they called it a War right from the off, when they continue to refuse to consider anything in reality even close to a two-state situation.
@aral The sides are accurately: pro-war/pro-genocide and anti-war/anti-genocide.
@gdinwiddie @aral the position of "some genocide" is also pro-genocide. Just like "a little bit racist" is also racist. Some descriptors are binary in nature.
@weyoun6 @aral
Only if you live in a one-dimensional world.
What is the side where you're trying to influence someone with power over a situation where you have no direct power; where you're trying to maintain a position of influence with that person who does?
That's just one non-binary point of view that comes readily to mind. Once you escape the binary view of the world, I'm sure you can think of others.
@gdinwiddie @aral so you're not anti-genocide?
@gdinwiddie @aral no interest in discussions with people who can't state they are anti-genocide.
@gdinwiddie @weyoun6 @aral
"What is the side where you're trying to influence someone with power over a situation where you have no direct power; where you're trying to maintain a position of influence with that person who does?"
That's a pretty accurate description of the student protests.
I.e. the anti genocide side.
@aral I was just discussing and making this point earlier today.
It seems people only understand this issue as matter of a football match, as you said.
@aral 100% this. I find it so weird that people treat it like some binary game. I'm sick of repeating that if I have to be on a team, it's team humanity and nature (war doesn't just destroy humans and grease intergenerational cycles of violence and trauma, it also poisons ecosystems for generations as well....).
@aral #Netanyahu has been waiting for years to kill as many Palestinians as he can. He propped up Hamas and did nothing to protect the Israeli people from terrorists.
@aral I am 100% anti-Israeli, and for good reasons.
From the very inception, Israel has been a settler colonial state. Not only did Zionists reject two other possible places to set up a Zionist state in the late 1800's, they picked the one place they knew was populated: Palestine.
Even if you're inclined to ignore that: ~97% of Israelis think the genocide is acceptable, Netanyahu is the longest serving Israeli PM, West Bank genocidal colonists, etc. The whole population is involved in genocide
@sashabilton @aral they certainly had a role to play, mainly capitulating to Zionists and leaving Palestinians to deal with well armed ex-partisans from WWII
@aral exactly this. I hate how everything has turned to if you're not against this you are for the other. Fuck that. Also for the benefit of those ....
I am very much against the genocide currently being committed by the state of Israel
@aral I don't think you fully understand what you are talking about and what is really happening here :(
@Ck Fuck off.
It is Netanyahu, not the Israel citizens.
The citizens do not support him. There have been protests for over a year now, well before #Oct7

@SpaceLifeForm @aral
The citizens of #Israel may not like #Netanyahu, but they do support the #genocide in #gaza. Most of those elected in the Knesset who are proposed to replace Netanyahu (eg Ben-Gvir) are even worse! This table shows the results of a survey from Tel Aviv Uni late 2023. As you can see, an overwhelming majority (over 90%) either approved of the #genocide occurring then - or wanted even more! Ethical, brave Israelis are a small minority.
@aral yep.
I’m pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli, which is to say, I’m pro all the people living in that region. I think they ALL deserve peace, security, and freedom.
Also, I don’t think either group will have the peace, security, and freedom they deserve until both groups do.
That is Netanyahu’s foolishness, thinking he can bomb Palestinians to increase his people’s security. (Or maybe he knows that but doesn’t care, as long as he can stay in power.)
@aral @mynameistillian I am pro-civilian.
In any war I root for the side whose victory would cause fewer civilian casualties. This is usually the defender, so I am pro-Palestine and pro-Ukraine of course. Distinction without a difference.
@aral I loved your post Aral, yes yes same here!!
"How dare you speak up against genocide, don't you know there's an important election coming up in the US?"
