How does genocide happen in 2024?

It doesn’t, of course. As Graeme Wood from The Atlantic explains, there are only tens of thousands of legally killed children, that’s all.

(Thanks, Graeme, we were all apparently very confused.)

See, y’all were getting worked up for nothing.

@aral when you find yourself writing "legally killed children" is when you need to stop and check yourself and wtf you are doing

@voxpopsicle @aral From the country that accepted school shootouts as an inevitable fact of life.

@Illuminatus They take powerful measures against shootings, they sent thoughts and prayers every time. @voxpopsicle @aral

@ghostdancer @Illuminatus @voxpopsicle @aral

Before you laugh you should know that thoughts and prayers have given this great nation the strength to weather 655 school shootings

@RnDanger
I understand the thoughts and prayers and the healing effect they can have on some people but they are just a patch and not a solution. It's sad and disheartening that politicians don't offer anything better .
@Illuminatus @voxpopsicle @aral

@aral At what point will these people look in the mirror and ask "Are we the baddies"?

@aral Also I'm pretty sure the Geneva Conventions' stance on killing unarmed children is "what? No, absolutely not", not "don't, unless someone else forfeits the child's rights by existing near them"

@bujold @aral I've felt like I'm in the Twilight Zone trying to convince people that it's still murder to kill innocent bystanders to get to the ones you're actually after.

They tend to bring up Hiroshima as some sort of gotcha, and I'm like, "You know that was ALSO bad, right? Like...we were clearly the bad guys in that scenario."

edit: not to mention the fact that "the ones Israel is actually after" is nothing if not debatable.

@aral

It's disgusting enough for a Yale politics lecturer to be advancing that "argument." It's next-level disgusting when it's advanced by a former president of Israel's Supreme Court.

He made this "argument" while publicly stating his unqualified support for his country's military operation in Gaza and endorsing his state's war crimes.

He *then* decided 2 months later not to recuse himself from an ICJ panel charged with adjudicating on the very same military operation.
#EthicsMuch?

@aral
"Shutting out the press" is a weird way to say "killing a record number of journalists."

@JohannaMakesGames Type, reread, submit it to their editor, have their editor approve it and then post it, you mean.

(I’d answer but I’m not capable of understanding such a thing. Which I think is a feature, not a bug.)

@aral @Handout

one part cognitive dissonance

another part semantic cleansing.

@aral i will note, as many have before, that the holocaust was legal.

@aral oh of course, how could be be so wrong? if the state says that killing children is correct then it's morally right to kill children.

@aral the true believers are terrifying. they will justify anything and everything if those they consider a legitimate authority have declared it lawful.

@aral what is his opinion on ethnic cleansing ? Perhaps he is blind to that as well.

@Quarky Depends, are we talking about legal ethnic cleansing?

@aral "Unsympathetic observers" Come on ! Any observer becomes unsympathetic once they observed tens of thousands of innocents being killed.

@aral I didn't know you could legally kill children </sarcasm>

@dzajew Sure you can, you just need the right arms dealer. I can hook you up with Bibi’s guy, Biden, if you like. Comes with full immunity against ICC and ICJ.

@aral Yeah. When I was at school, learning about WWII, or when I heard stories about that times from relatives, I thought/hoped, that it wouldn't happen again, yet here we are.

@aral I mean primary school. Later, quite quickly I became disillusioned.

@aral Yes, well any old excuse really.

It's funny how the worlds mighty armies target women and children and old people and patients in hospital.
You could be forgiven for thinking they were the usual bunch of fearties afraid of actual combat.

@aral does mr. Wood believe the holocaust was legal, and therefore good and just, because it occurred during an ugly war?

I am mercifully numb to these stories since this one, 33 years ago.

170,000 dead Iraqi kids under the age of 5. Killed by epidemics of cholera and typhus.

When the water treatment plants all stopped after America bombed the civilian power plants.

Knowing that this would have no military effect because military bases have their own power.

The Pentagon admitted it was specifically to create postwar "leverage" over the civilians.

@aral genocide apologia can certainly be seen as incitement to genocide as is ongoing still...

So this bellend is guilty of that war crime

As well as being educated beyond his moral ethical and intellectual capabilities

A lazy brain showing their entire filthy ass to the universe
