Catholic church cancels ‘incompatible’ concert by Dublin gay men’s choir

Priest wrote to choir to say event was ‘not compatible with our mission as a Roman Catholic parish church’

Why all those words when “we’re raging bigots” is so much shorter?

The Irish Times · Catholic church cancels ‘incompatible’ concert by Dublin gay men’s choirBy Colin Gleeson

@aral Why is it so hard for churches to "love thy neighbor" and to "not judge lest thou be judged" ?

@dascandy Because they are patriarchal institutions of control, coercion, extraction, and exploitation and they always have been.

@aral so strange how a roman catholic church would ignore the words of the pope for their own personal beliefs, which inspire hatred and segregation rather than unity and community

@aral it's not ideal but he's nearly 90 so the fact he's even willing to openly support the LGBT community in public is a huge boon given what group we're talking about. I imagine it's likely just old habits dying hard. He has pushed for change in the church in terms of queer acceptance and I think that shouldn't be overlooked because of the fact he said bad words behind closed doors.

@maika Yeah, I guess some heads of horrible patriarchal institutions are better than others.

@aral
Jesus Christ said a lot about loving others (the stranger, the "least", the poor, prostitutes, etc)

I don't recall him saying a word about his mission to support cishet sex. Or maybe a mission to stop gays from singing.

@aral 🤦

And now with Francis getting weird I don't know what to think

@aral boys choir seems on the nose for the catholic church but maybe I’m just an asshole

@suethepooh I do believe there is an asshole in this situation but it isn’t you.

@aral @gwaldby

Their mission? That is mostly avoiding prosecution these days, isn’t it?
