Looks like Western media is already attempting to normalise Israel’s supply-chain-based terrorist attack from yesterday that indiscriminately and savagely wounded ~3,000 people (yes, they’re people, as hard as it might be for some white folks to understand), some 300 of them critically, and killed others, including a 10-year-old girl.
But don’t worry, it’s not like many USians/EUpeans carry personal electronic devices made in foreign countries or anything… what’s the worst that could happen?
@aral are they people? But they are not Europeans or white Americans...
@fmors Oh, damn, yeah, my bad…
@aral@mastodon.ar.al @fmors@fosstodon.org There I go having to write in English all the time to renew my "considered person, barely" pass.
@aral This is going to blow up in our faces not too far down the road. Oh, and nobody will (should) ever trust the manufacturer that allowed for this explosive alteration.
More reason to design so they can build so we can buy open source. Forget the specs, at least it will not blowup in your face.
I edited this text since information on the manufacturer is now coming out. See responses below for more accurate information.
@bigTanuki Open source would not have prevented this unless every pager was checked after receiving it (or entirely produced in-house). Do you want to be opening up a device that might possibly contain an explosive to see if it matches the open source schematics?
@aral Very true, but having a device that can be easily repaired and updated will lead to fewer device turnovers, and less likely hood of a unit that has been tampered with. I personally would not be able to open a device and check it, but I can see how in the future, repair or upgrade services, will happily fix your device and also check for tampering of hardware, and software. Personally, I use older phone models because they meet my needs just fine. I would love a mobile device that I can toggle parts out (like with a framework laptop) so the original main body can be used for at least 10 years. I believe that only Open Hardware and Open Code will allow for this kind of device.
We all really do not need a smaller device every 2 years.
@aral @bigTanuki End goal is entire production in house. Printing silicon in single quantity on demand from open source verified designs, with no middle men touching anything. All commerce only raw materials & energy.
@bigTanuki @aral That question mark is a little offputting. Could you clarify if it was or wasn't Motorola? They're currently still on my "least bad" list.
@hp @bigTanuki @aral I turned on the radio too late to hear full details, but my understanding is the brand are already denying responsibility by claiming they outsourced to a producer in Hungary. I think it was even framed as the producer in Hungary 'acquired permission' to use the brand name, so the brand is trying to take as little responsibility as possible. Don't think the brand name was mentioned in that news piece though.
"The Lebanese source said the group had ordered pagers made by Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, which several sources say were brought into the country earlier this year. The source identified a photograph of the model of the pager, an AR-924." says Reuters.
"[GA]'s founder said the company did not make the pagers used in the explosions in Lebanon. They were manufactured by a company in Europe that had the right to use the Taiwanese firm's brand."
AP: "Taiwanese company Gold Apollo said Wednesday it had authorized use of its brand on the AR-924 pager model and a Budapest, Hungary-based company called BAC Consulting produced and sold the pagers. Further information on BAC wasn’t immediately available."

Time uses the same verbatim.
@hp @Iwillyeah @aral Thank you for clarifying the manufacturer. I have a feeling that this will still send a chill down every manufacturers back.
Bang. You nailed it.
@aral They are not USians! People from the US call themselves "americans". I know it's funny, cause for everyone else someone from Canada, Brazil or Cuba would also be an american... so I propose a compromise - let's call them USricans.
