The thing you have to understand about techbros is that these are not intelligent people. Greedy, yes. Intelligent, no.
@aral bbbut capitalism drives innovation! (Sent from and through things that were first created *in spite* of capitalism)
@aral They have a ruthless smartness of their own though, and shouldn’t be underestimated I’d add as a fair warning to those willing to join the fight (i.e. Be prepared). They can and they will destroy you in sophisticated or brutal ways if given the opportunity, or at least try very hard, as you definitely know.
most of the times, they are just walking massive piles of privilege, luck and greed
@aral they have a sort of artificial general intelligence (but only according to their own definition)
@nicklockwood @aral They do what they do to compensate for their small... language model.
Yes, for me the bros coming to prominence in our industry was a profound loss.
I came of age in a tech culture, that while not very diverse, was open, welcoming, and supportive.
"Tech" today is a sewer, a huge part of the larger problems we face.
Oh, except for here .
@CartyBoston I think the problem is summarised neatly by that word “industry.” Extractivism charting the course for humanity is how we ended up in this mess. Until and unless we invest our common wealth in preserving and enhancing the common good, this is the path we’ll continue stumbling down.
@aral Glass Onion is a documentary
@aral It's ok, The Techbros (TM) have redefined intelligent people as whatever they are.
When _all_ you have is money, the only thing you _can_ do is declare what you think is the truth.
@aral
I was literally just thinking about it this today!
Like, nobody is asking the consequences of their work. This kind of blindness is surely not a sign of intelligence or integrity!
@aral They're exactly as intelligent as their greed allows them to be. So, not very much to begin with & if they're successful & start making a profit, that already feeble intellect shrinks further as the greed increases.
@aral I think the ones that are just greedy but not intelligent don't get far, the ones that are intelligent but not greedy also got eaten by the system.
That leaves you with both. Not genius, but definitely intelligent, and obviously greedy.
@Sh41 Depends on how you define intelligence. I don’t consider idiots who would destroy their own habitat for some temporary profit intelligent. Each to their own, I guess.
@aral I think you can be intelligent and still make those choices, if you're greedy enough
@aral @Sh41 I think there are different kinds of intelligence.
I’d say many techbros are intelligent in the sense that they can understand difficult math and be good at programming. The problems techbros at OpenAI or Meta are solving surely aren’t easy problems.
To your point: They are indeed not very intelligent when they can’t see that Altman is a manipulative schemer or that Musk isn’t the builder they often claim he is, he merely owns the people who build—them.
A dangerous combination.
@aral I think it's weird that we talk about greed as if it were recent phenomenon. Haven't people always been greedy? Does anyone think that the per capita greed of the human race is increasing? If so, why?
