If this fucking shitshow doesn’t light a fire under the EU right fucking now, nothing ever will. Trump has not only insulted President Zelensky but all of Ukraine and every ally they have in Europe. He’s also shown exactly what support we can expect from the US in Europe when Russia comes knocking on our door next. And that’s to say absolutely fuck all. It’s time to step up to the fucking plate.
@aral time for the U.K., Norway, Poland, NL etc to replace their F35s with Rafales, Gripens and Eurofighters if they want an air force
@Nicovel0 @aral they are new, and very expensive, so what do they do with them? They probably can't sell them without the US' approval.
Options and unfulfilled orders might be cancelled though, more realistically.
Germany is planning to buy F35, mostly to assure future participation in nuclear sharing. But if that's out the window, then there is much less of a reason to get them.
I'm no air power expert, but probably none of the European jets quite measure up in capabilities.
@aral good point. (and how much money would the USA's Big Tech companies owe in EU fines if the EU wasn't going easy on them because they rely on the USA's help for regional defense?)
@martinjuhasz @aral Did you read the blog post from @robin ?
https://berjon.com/digital-sovereignty/
(From here it looks like the EU is in a strong position for an IT trade war—in 1995 and 2007 people were lining up for US IT products, now they're looking for tips on how to turn the new features off)
the #Eurostack, so hot right now https://blog.zgp.org/mlp-2025-02-08/
@aral King Charles needs to immediately withdraw the invitation of a State visit he made to Trump.
Our government also needs to tell the orange buffoon where to go.
@aral Trump and Vance didn’t humiliate President Zelensky, current leader of the free world, they embarrassed themselves, America, and every American. Zelensky stands tall. Fuck Trump.
@fsinn Agreed. Changed it to insulted.
@aral Zelensky was not humiliated. The USA was. Every one of us has to live with the shame of it.
@3dogcouch True. Updated to insulted (which is how I feel also).
@aral With respect, they did not humiliate Zelenskyy. They tried to, but failed. Zelenskyy held his own against a barrage of lies, slander, and bullying.
Any humiliation belongs to Trump and Vance — the bullying liar and the toadying slimebag. The world is aghast.
Agree with this. Perhaps it is just a difference in language, but who was humiliated are the US administration and by extension all US citizens, not Zelenskyy.
@bodhipaksa Yep. Updated the post.
@aral “Insulted” is the perfect word choice. Thank you.
@bodhipaksa Thank @tim; it was his suggestion :)
@aral@mastodon.ar.al
edits to posts don't federate beyond mastodon was considering a similar remark... oh well...
@bodhipaksa@mastodon.scot @tim@cloudisland.nz
@aral no he did not humiliate Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy stood right for his country, with dignity, respect and honore. What has been humiliated here is America. Trump is compromising with a foreign adversary, this is treason
@anatole You’re right; fixed.
@aral Perhaps "insulted" fits better than "humiliated". But yes. Agreed.
@tim Good point (as with the other replies). Yes, “insulted” is the better word. Will update.
@aral I think Zelensky knew what to expect from that meeting, he went to be their punching bag, to show the world who they are. That was perfectly clear
Couldn't have said it better
@aral The EU is dead. Nothing can be done in an organisation that requires unanimity with the like of Orbán an Fico. Time to set up an alternative security framework (without Russia’s puppets).
