“50,000 dead Palestinians isn’t enough to call it genocide.”

How fucking morally vacuous do you have to be for such a thought to even enter that privileged brain of yours?

Forget the consensus of every genocide scholar out there that this is genocide. Forget the live-streamed suffering. How devoid of humanity are you for your argument to be “that’s just not enough dead people for me.”

@bifouba @aral

Exactly. It's not about how many, it's about who was killed and with what intent and rhetoric.

If there was any safe number of an ethnic minority countries were allowed to murder before it was officially a genocide triggering sanctions under international law, you can be sure some countries would be killing that many minus 1 every year.

The problem is Israel has realised there may be no number of Palestinians they can kill that will cause any meaningful pushback by the West.

@petealexharris @aral

I've read reports that European diplomats were literally asking Netanyahu to try and keep the daily death count below 100.

@bifouba @petealexharris Got any links? It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

@aral @petealexharris

I've had a quick look, but I'm afraid I can't find the source now. I read so much these days, incl. things like article screenshots on social media that a keyword search on my computer won't show, and it could have been in German rather than English...

The bottom line is: don't quote me on it. Although as you say, it's nothing if not believable.

@aral The Thing is, that they are nether (North)Americans nor Europeans so it just doesn't matther how many they are.
(It does but not for them it seams)

@aral Saying “50,000 dead isn’t enough to call it genocide” betrays a grave misunderstanding. Genocide isn’t measured in numbers, but in intent: to destroy a people in whole or in part. That includes not just killing, but bombing hospitals, starving civilians, making life unlivable, erasing the possibility of existence. Anyone honestly looking at the pattern should know what this is.

@Flatus @aral

It's a tried and true Hasbara talking point, right out of the playbook. They trot it out every time, no matter how despicable it really makes them sound.

Always leaves me wondering if they plan to keep a token few alive, in zoos.

@aral

Genocide is not defined in terms of numbers, but intent, successful intent.

50,000 represents the recorded verified deaths, but the system of record keeping has been destroyed.

Don’t forget Lance Polish an article where the estimates are closer to 200,000 and that was six months ago I think.

We will find out the total numbers of years and from now, because the population simply isn’t be there.

Quite easily 10% of the Gazan population is dead.

@aral
It's really handy for them to have a set of goalposts because they can always move them.

@aral also genocide isn't dependent on # of people killed? it's defined by intent. if I systematically set out to exterminate all nauruans, that's a genocide. it doesn't matter that there are only like a thousand of them. the best you can say is that an unusually high death toll is probably correlated with genocide, but i'm pretty sure that by that logic, so is being german.

caveat in next post

@aral Caveat: I don't agree with all of these characterized as genocides (Osage murders, for instance, were pretty clearly motivated by money) and many that I'd characterize as such were left out (Khmielnicki, Russian Empire pogroms/policies, Russian Civil War pogroms, Norway/Swedish actions as regards Sami, Tibet, Stolen Generations, boarding schools in Canada/US, Congo Free State, Japan in WW2, Roman actions against Jews, etc., etc.). But this was a lot easier than doing that kind of analysis.

@aral any "person" that thinks and talks like that is not a human, is a big Malakas
