Scale… grow… ever larger… always…
Motherfucking rocket ships baby!
Who’s gonna be the European Elon Musk? We need one, right?!
Let’s embrace Big Tech and recreate Silicon Valley in Europe because what could fucking go wrong?
Instead of say… supporting small, decentralised technology that protects human rights and democracy. No, sorry, we have no money for that sort of crap.

(In our ten years of existence Small Technology Foundation has not received 1 fucking Euro from the EU. And this, so very clearly, explains why. Enjoy your European version of US technofascism when it arrives. You’ll have deserved it fully.)

@aral I'm sorry, Aral, that you have to put up with that and don't get the support you deserve (and that the rest of us need people like you to get).
While I—being the naive and uninformed youngster raised in a capitalist society that I was—still hoped to secure a well-paying and prestigious job at Google after my computer science studies, you already knew what's happening. And you've been informing folks about it, since years.
It's a shame that the EU wants to create a European variant of Elon Musk instead of changing the system that allows and incentivizes the emergence of figures like Elon Musk.
@davidculley Thanks, David. But it’s been a slow road to realisation for me also (not uncommon when you come from a place of privilege).
Silicon Valley culture never sat right with me but, back in the Flash days, I was rolling with the folks from Adobe without even a clue about the rest of their business (hint: adtech) or the greater issues with Big Tech in general.
I guess what matters is what you do when do become aware of it. Do you still keep going because you’re doing well within a fucked up system or do you decide to try and unfuck it?
@aral Wise words!
I guess what the EU Commission means when it says it wants Europe to be the "place where innovation thrives", they expressly look for innovation that thrives because the companies exploit the population. Taking after the Big Tech role model.
The EU Commission apparently doesn't want or care for innovation outside that Big Tech paradigm, since there are lots of "startups" with fresh, new ideas that don't get funding.
It seems it's only those exploitative tech companies that *may* thrive in Europe, apparently.
