@aral cracking the problem of surveillance capital, or capitalism more generally, is ultra-hard. Even in a decentralized system like the fediverse there's nothing to prevent admins from setting up with a surveillance capital business model, luring users with promises of ad revenue (like YouTube).
With the recent Librem phone announcement maybe a future direction could be to develop software for that and promote it as a freedom respecting communications platform.
@bob In a certain sense there is though, because if they don't turn off federation you don't need to be on their instance. The problem of someone creating their own social network which happens to run on GS or Masto in a closed off manner isn't something we need to worry about necessarily I think.
@tekk a related point is that if some admins do adopt a surveillance/advertising based business model then many other instances might just block them from pushing ads and so they would remain isolated. The fediverse might have a sort of natural immunity by its design.
