Don’t use Google AMP

“Google AMP is bad news for how the web is built, it’s bad news for publishers of credible online content, and it’s bad news for consumers of that content. Google AMP is only good for one party: Google.” – thelink.is/google-amp-bad

“If I had my way, Mobile Safari would refuse to render AMP pages. It’s a deliberate effort by Google to break the open web.” – daringfireball.net/linked/2017

@aral @ziix Google is trying to replace W3C. W3C sucks but Google sucks more.

@animeirl @dogjaw @ZiiX @aral

very true.

But in this case the extend part of the embrace/extend/extinguish can be used for good: the noxious aspect of AMP is how Google handles the cache, so let's build other caches that preserve the publisher's context
(Disclaimer: my company is building one, although I don't work on that)

@aral @ZiiX If they start making guitar amps I'll look at them...

The funny/sad thing about this is that we don't really have to invent any new technology to work well with mobile. The Web used to be perfectly browsable with dial-up and 640x480 in 16 colors

@aral @ZiiX I dig this piece. Except there are WAY bigger problems with Safari than AMP. I hate that browser.

@aral @ziix Retards will still use it. You can refuse service to browsers that support it, or create malware respectively for it. The most accelerated mobile pages are raw ASCII text files served under gopher. But tell me who in their right mind still serves gopherspaces? I mean, make the jump already and join the Android space! Kernels are published daily here! https://source.android.com/
Simpler solution don't use google anything.
Better suggestion don't use centralized systems, github for example or even the actual design of the web.

@aral @ZiiX this is exactly the same as Faceboo instant articles. Only nobody gives a shit about that

It confuses me to see an Apple/Safari user complain about Google. I always wonder what the tolerance threshold; why complain about what you know is happening on one closed system but acquiesce about all you don't know about your closed OS..?
@aral @ZiiX

@aral @ZiiX "a subset of HTML" ROTFL. We did try already, and I even forgot the name of it :D
