Small Is Beautiful – live stream

Join us in one hour (5PM Irish time) to learn about:

- Small Web (a sneak peek at the tool we’re building that will enable anyone to get their own Small Web site in under a minute)

- Owncast (which we’ll be using for the first time to stream Small Is Beautiful) – please let us know how it is for you during the stream

We also have 5 Owncast t-shirts to give away thanks to @gabek

To mark our moving our Small Is Beautiful live stream to Owncast, the lovely @gabek gave us five t-shirts (unisex & women’s cut) to give away today.

To get one, join us in the studio during the stream (we’ll give out the link during) and ask us a question or add your voice to the topic (text or on camera).

On our first stream via Owncast, join us to see a demo of Domain, a work-in-progress tool to make setting up your own Small Web site as easy as signing up for a Big Web service.

Just updated the Small Technology Foundation web site with our shiny new Owncast embed for tomorrow’s Small Is Beautiful :)

Just released Site.js version 17.2.0

Adds: --enable-embeds flag to enable pages on your site to be embedded on other sites.

Fixes: When Owncast is installed via Site.js, streams cannot be embedded on other sites (see

Oh this? It’s just me setting up Owncast in under a minute to use as our streaming server for tomorrow’s live stream.

Tune in to Small Is Beautiful tomorrow at 5PM Irish time to find out ;)

Can the Small Web be as easy (or easier) to use than the Big Web?

(Spoiler: Yes.)

In this episode, Laura and I will be talking about the design challenges of doing so as well as demonstrating Domain (previously Basil), a work-in-progress platform that enables just that.

This will also be the first time we stream Small is Beautiful using our own Owncast instance.

Anyone else have the “Detect text from picture” in Mastodon get stuck at “Preparing OCR…” Thought I’d give it a try today for the first time and can’t get past this.

Why so coy, Twitter? Why won’t you show me who you followed for me today?

(“Algorithmic” is just a euphemism for lack of individual agency.)

Registered for my Covid vaccine. So I guess it’s a matter of weeks not months now… 🤞

A new record: I’m now following -2 people on Twitter.

Ever since I unfollowed everyone – why? For my peace of mind… see –Twitter’s lost the plot. Today it showed me following two people. When I clicked through, it was four. Unfollowed them and…

(If they’re messing this up, what else are they messing up while filtering and moderating your reality and analysing and categorising you?)

Today on Twitter Can’t Count: Twitter ended up following two more people for me. One of whom had no followers while I was apparently following them.

These are the systems folks trust to filter reality for them, eh?

Another odd side-effect (effect?) of unfollowing everyone on Twitter* is that Twitter no longer shows you your mentions (Tweetbot does).

* Why? It’s nothing personal… read: Hell Site –

With a first glimpse at setting up and streaming to an Owncast server in under a minute using something we’re working on…

(Grab your webcam & headphones if you want to not just watch but join us in the studio.)

So you’re probably sick of hearing me talk for years on how we need to make having our own places on the Web as easy as signing up to the factory farms of Big Tech.

On today’s Small Is Beautiful, you’re going to see a glimpse of a very early demonstration of that with Owncast (your own Twitch).

It’s nowhere near ready for public use but it’s a very satisfying step after several years of work on infrastructure following our work with the City of Ghent.

5PM Irish time:

🎉️ First successful installation of an app with Basil with full progress indication (from the admin panel). It’s very very early and not polished in any way but boy, does it feel good after several years spent building infrastructure to see this work :)

I will demonstrate this live by setting up an Owncast server in under a minute on today’s Small Is Beautiful – watch live at 5PM Irish time at
