This is so close to what I’m hacking on with the Small Web stuff… very cool + best of luck with it @pfrazee – will be watching with interest :)

If you’re a developer in 2021 and you’re adding tracking devices from Google, Facebook, etc., to your sites and apps, the one thing you can’t do any longer is to feign innocence. You know exactly what you’re doing and you’re complicit in perpetuating surveillance capitalism.

Hey devs,

Wanna be good little surveillance capitalists? Start by embedding Google’s tracking devices on your sites and apps. Some good ones to start with include Google Analytics, Google Sign-In and YouTube videos.

Alphabet, Inc. thanks you for your services.

If you missed it, the recording is up on the site.

S’update: quick live stream (today’s dev update) in a minute or two

ar.al

Hmm, my first Deno experience has been cut short (trying to install Denopack):

Download deno.land/std@0.69.0/path/_uti
error: Import 'unpkg.com/lodash-es@4.17.15/de' failed: 500 Internal Server Error

And in last night’s entirely normal dreams, I was teaching talking horses how to count.

They were so busy asking “will it scale?” they forgot to ask “does it need to scale?”

S’update! Small update on what I’ve been working on today starts in a few minutes.

Today: an experiment in forking Snowpack.

Heads up: short live stream in about 5 minutes to give you a technical development update on Place/Small Web/etc. Will give studio link also if you have questions, thoughts, etc.

@tobykurien Hey Toby, thanks. Aware of + was initially very excited about it many years ago. However, while superficially similar, we’re very different. We stand opposed to—and critical of—surveillance capitalism instead of legitimising it, working for/within it, and looking to interoperate with it. For a political analogy, they’re more neoliberal/centrist whereas we’re more socialist/anarchist. (And they made it clear they think we’re full of shit, don’t know what we’re doing, and will fail.)

We live under capitalism, not democracy. The sooner you understand that, far from being complementary, these two ideologies are diametrically opposed, and yes, that this is a zero-sum game, the sooner things start to make sense.

@Aral Balkan @Laura Kalbag Another great episode, with important topics. I wish I could force everyone I know to watch this!

Also, heads up, we’re probably going to move to doing a Small is Beautiful stream every month instead of once a week.

It’s just too disruptive to my coding.

I might do a more frequent short technical stream just to report on my ongoing work on Place (not ready for use: github.com/small-tech/place/tr)

Small is Beautiful

If you missed today’s live stream, you can watch the recording here:

Live in a little under half an hour… What is the “public stack” and why do we need it? (I mean, we have companies like Facebook and Google that give us everything we need for free anyway, right?) ;)

(Have your webcam/headphones ready if you want to join us in the studio.)

Extinction is a scary word, let’s call it “the singularity” instead.
