There’s a fine line between having principles and being arrogant/elitist/inaccessible. I believe folks in the #foss world aren’t always aware of where that line is and that hurts the whole movement.
When I’m feeling a bit better (hopefully later this week, still taking it easy as I recover from COVID), I’m going to put up the recording we did with @gabek (hope you’re feeling better too, btw… also COVID) where we go into this in the context of small web.
Suggested to a source forge that gets flack for being inaccessible/elitist that they simply use the plain text part in a multi-part email instead of rejecting it on their discussion list as some folks are limited in their ability to send text-only email.
Response: we consider that a bug in your email service provider.
Context: there’s a tool I use and want to contribute to but I can’t without jumping through arbitrary hoops. I’m emailing with the author directly now because it’s easier.

Because the Fediverse uses chronological timelines, and because it has a worldwide audience, it is totally fine to boost your own post later so it can reach people in different time zones.
There's no algorithm deciding what people see in their main Fediverse timeline, so they just see whatever happens to be there when they are online.
here's the SVG if anyone else wants it - you'll need Liberation Sans, and of course replace "YOURPHONEHERE" and "Researcher INITIAL" https://unascribed.com/f/e06a01ee/intelligent-malicious.svg
None of the policies this "far left" wants to enact are extreme, unless you consider guaranteeing a decent standard of living for every citizen "extreme".
It's only extreme if you think our current system works and needs to be even more liberal and capitalist.
"Far Left". Pure BS. It's just the left. As in "let's stop billionaires and giant companies from ruining the world". That's not far left at all, that's basic common sense. The worst damage Macron caused was putting the left on the same level as the nationalists extremists.

1. It is awesome. I missed it last year and was so sad about it. New job was busy, but SummerSchool would have given me lots of ideas to help.

If you're using Mastodon through the website, you can stop new posts appearing automatically by using "slow mode".
To switch it on, go to Preferences > Slow Mode, tick the box and click "Save Changes". (To switch it off, untick and save.)
This will make timelines (including Home, Local and Federated) as well as notifications no longer scroll automatically when you are reading them. Instead, new posts will be hidden behind a clickable link at the top of each column.
(Thanks to @aral for suggesting tip!)
