Weekly GNU-like #MobileLinux Update (13/2025): Crossing Platforms, Breaking Barriers
Initial release of the #immich upload daemon is ready for people to use and report the tons of issues it probably has lol. You can find it here https://github.com/luigi311/immich_upload_daemon Feel free to open any issues/PR. Its still missing the charging only option but the networking features are there so you can set wifi only and/or SSID checking and you can even just check for metered connections. Mostly developed on my and for my #FLX1 via remote vscode.

The Pine Phone Pro arrived earlier this week. After a few unfocused, false starts I finally got it booting into Gnome on PostmarketOS and currently installing Waydroid over ssh.
My wife uses a cheesey coupon clipping app (iOS/Android) for doing the groceries and such. I'll need to take a look at what traffic flows in-n-out of this app to see what is being farmed and segregate/container off if required.
We are heavy Signal users but I may use this as an excuse to set up a XMPP server. Twas on the 'roadmap'.
Initial impressions are good. Definitely not as shiny and smooth as an iOS or Android device but - it's a phone. We spent half our lives with dumb rotary dialing doohickeys - we'll survive. lol
Pretty impressed with Gnome on a touch device so far. This is my first real experience with it. No 'klunkiness' so far but just scratching the surface.
It will be interesting to see how a non-technical person takes to it. I'm going to monkey with it myself for the first week or so to find the hard edges to save her the frustration.
I want to experiment with Android Auto - see what (if anything) is possible.
I also obtained a Seeed Studio Sensecap T1000-E (meshtastic, lora, etc.) to connect to this device. We'll see how far I get with that.
I really need a staff... Ha!
Dear @Mer__edith and the the amazing @signalapp team,
After the last update, the Signal "desktop app" is requiring us to launch the mobile app - however, many of us do not have the Android or any other "mobile" version of the Signal app any more.
We are a large (by our standards) group of #Linux phone users, and your "desktop" app is our "mobile" app : )
Our previous phones on which #SignalApp was initially activated was an Android or Apple device and we have since then completely migrated to #Linuxphones. Some of us may have registered Signal on #signalcli, Flare, #Molly, Signal Android in #WayDroid, etc.
The #mobileLinux community is growing - we have members spanning a good number of projects and devices, e.g.
- @purism #Librem5 and #LibertyPhone running #Debian-based #PureOS #GnuLinux, #Alpine-based #PostmarketOS or #Mobian,
- @PINE64 #Pinephone and PP Pro running #ManjaroARM, #SailfishOS, etc.
- @furilabs #FLX1 running #Droidian-based #FuriOS,
- a wide variety of Android phones (including OnePlus 6, Google Pixel 3, #Fairphone 4 & 5) running #Alpine-based @postmarketOS ,
- @volla , #Fxtec and #Brax3 devices running #UbuntuTouch by @ubports,
- devices running @mobian which is part of #Debian project, etc.
[Apologies to any project I may have failed to include - you are all appreciated]

Since #immich still has a lot of time before we get a usable #mobilelinux client that would help us backup our images easily. I am working on a daemon that will upload images automatically. What features would you be interested in?
Current ideas so far
1. Wifi only
2. SSID checking
3. Charging only
4. Systemd service for autostart and logging
5. Specifying paths
Thank you #gameDad, #pinePhone, #eReader (#butSpecificallyAnOldEReaderWithButtonsThatDoesNotGoOnTheInternet) for being nice fidgety little devices that can go in my pockets and bring me harmless joys throughout the day
Aw thanks Dan, I didn't expect
Not you

Weekly GNU-like #MobileLinux Update (12/2025): GNOME 48 and other goodies
Thanks for another interesting roundup! Great to see all the work happening on smooth, high end video playback, even on the Pinephone! Also interesting to see what #Liberux are working on. Hopefully the product will match the promises! We need more decent spec Linux phones! (Preferably at non-insane prices but hey, I'm prepared to pay a premium if the hardware is worth it).
barebox v2025.03.0 has been released
This month's release improves hardware support across a number of SoCs: #rk3588 and sama5d2 drivers, field-return support on the i.MX8M, AM6x processors can now boot from eMMC, and eMMC trim has been greatly sped up.
In addition, @dok 's patches for first sunxi support have landed and the generic barebox 2nd stage image can now run on different A64 boards like the #Pinephone.
See the release announcement for more: https://github.com/barebox/barebox/releases/tag/v2025.03.0
@linmob I don't understand too much of IT, but #set_of_patches sounds a reasonable way to build a #Linux_Phone to me, on #pinephone or else.

Look at that: If you dislike systemd and like debian packages, but want Phosh instead of hildon (on Maemo Leste), Movuan has you covered:

Basically, that's a #devuan for your #PinePhone

Weekly GNU-like #MobileLinux Update (11/2025): #Libadwaita 1.7 and news from #Sxmo
I didn't get the memo that there is "Landesweiter #Warntag" in RLP today and was surprised by the sirens. The #pinephone I use for testing catched the #cellbroadcast message :
[/org/freedesktop/ModemManager1/CBM/4] new cbm: received

Talking with my non-techie wife over breakfast. Well, non-telecom/IT techie.
We got on the topic of data privacy and billionaires and Apple and geopolitics...
Just ordered a PinePhone Pro for her to replace her old iPhone 8. We'll see how this works out. She needs to make calls, run Signal to talk to the rest of the family, SMS with others, and a web browser for ad hoc research. She's dislikes 'all that pop culture and social media crap on the web'.
Worst case - I get a new PinePhone. Ha.
