Does homeownership still make sense?
It could take up to 16 years for some renters to save for a down payment. Is it worth it?

My local MP, Carla Denyer (Green), on the UK's disgusting private renting situation. As Labour are clearly going to renege on previous commitments again, our only hope is people like her trying to put proper protections back in the coming renters bill.
I hope she succeeds. Anyone arguing against these protections doesn't care about people, just money.
I’m sick of landlords treating renters like cash cows | Metro News

Part of the American Dream is homeownership, but TBH, if you have a good landowner, #renting is amazing and completely both legitimate and defensible.
Essentially, you're outsourcing your housing and home maintenance. You're paying money to get more time--time that a homeowner spends fixing things.
Of the last 27 years, 16 of them were spent renting. I have no regrets.
For those of you interested in the possibilities of increased market regulation, here's an analysis of how the cap on letting agents' fees played out in the UK rental market.... makes for an interesting read & has some parallels with the Q. of the 'harm' or otherwise caused to the labour market by the minimum wage...
I'm amazed how angry this rental listing has made me:
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/152223395#/
This is a house just a few doors away from me. It looks *nothing* like the photos in this listing.
Those photos are from when someone still lived in it as a home that belonged to them, as can be seen from all the plants outside, all the decorations on the walls, all the careful effort to make a small space work for them.
But ever since it's been rented out it's been completely bare and plain.
If there’s one bit of advice I could give to #disabled folk about dealing with both #academia and even #housing via #renting ? It’s to make sure the fuckers leave a paper trail wherever they go.
Whatever happens between you and your landcunt, you and your university, make sure they’re caught doing it on camera in 4k.
That’s to say, get plenty of written correspondence over email backing up what you’re experiencing. That way, if you need to take legal action later, you have documented proof.
Our landlord's real estate agent: "*DO NOT* disconnect the electricity until after we've completed the final inspection."
Tenants Victoria: "Some rental providers and agents will tell you that the utilities need to stay on for a period of time after you move out, usually saying this is needed for the final inspection or to show the property to a new renter. You do not need to do this. You can, and should, arrange for the utilities to be disconnected on your move-out date."

I think any landbastard who rents out their apartment in any kind of a dangerous or health threatening state, should get thrown in prison for 5 years. Normally I'm a restorative justice kind, but I think we can make an exception for these pieces of shit. They dont deserve any kind of legal mercy as far as I'm concerned.
The tenants in the flat below me have spent most of their time living around rising damp and mold *everywhere*. #housing #landlords #renting
Anyone looking to rent in Dublin: There's a place going in a house in Stoneybatter.
Rent is €1,245 per month, not including bills (internet & gas/electricity).
Available from 1 November 2024.
(This has been advertised elsewhere; holler for further details.)
Landlords are fed up? Imagine how the tenants are being fed up with the shit they're dealing with, especially when landlords and/or estate agents are screwing them over and over
And it's genuinely funny how Labour's Renters Rights Bill, which is very good but still a bit mild, already makes landlords freak the hell out
The fact that so many of us have gotten accustomed to the instability of #renting is wild to me. It should NOT be tolerated.
Its wild to think of how we are all terrified of customising our own homes, lest we get even more of our deposit robbed of us when we inevitably move out from a #rent hike.
Like how is that OK? We pay these bastard's wages for doing fuck all, and into the bargain we don't even get to customise our own living spaces to reflect who we are??
This may be a Boston (MA USA) specific rental question, but: my lease renews in Oct and my landlord asked if I'm staying another year & yes I am, BUT it's very likely I will move before the lease is fully up (e.g. next summer)
I'm undecided if I should say anything and see if she would go for a mo-to-mo. I'm inclined NOT to, I doubt she will have any trouble finding a new tenant if I leave early (I would give her multiple month's notice). Anything I'm not thinking of here?
I hate #renting. And what the hell is the point of property managers. Useless excuse for a profession.

Edit: thanks to @Cassandra for the website: https://www.oclt.ca Here you can help with fund raising by purchasing bonds that return simple interest of 3.5% to 4.5% depending on period and amount.
Thing is that #homeownership-rates in #Germany are low because #renting worked.
We had strong regulation, #landlords where bound by many rules while #renters had a lot of legal protections.
And it was way cheaper than buying a house or flat. Which moreover was insanly complicated.
But things have turned 180 degrees.
Now renters are stuck in their places with less & less legal protection, prices are rising to the sky and buying a home is just unimaginable.
It's a fucking trap now.
