Andrew Fraknoi is a man on a mission—a space mission, that is. For decades, he’s inspired and educated both students and the public on the wonders of astronomy, from Foothill and Cañada colleges to San Francisco State University. “This is the golden age of astronomy,” Andrew declares. From radio stations and local TV to The Today Show, he’s become the Bay Area’s go-to astronomer for explaining celestial phenomena in down-to-earth terms.
Ed Yong's most recent blog post.
The preeminent science write of the times, Ed Yong publishes a monthly newsletter about his efforts to educate people about the importance of science, and of organizing community against the demonizing of science in the world, and especially in the US currently.
You can read with no paywall, and you can also subscribe for whatever you think it's worth. Also he's got lots of bird photos.

The Trump/Musk DOGE firings of federal workers could leave 1 million people jobless due to the ripple effects in industries that rely on those workers. (See link below). But the freeze on federal grants, especially in health and science, could kill many more jobs than that, including even in the private sector. Consider that Stanford, a private university, yesterday declared a hiring freeze due to uncertainty over funding resulting from the Trump policies.
At Least 880 Workers Were Fired at #US #Weather Agency
#NOAA employed 12,000 people, including 6,700 #science personnel
Hundreds more employees are expected to be let go at NOAA as soon as Friday, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the information is private.
#RickSpinrad said “The mission will suffer. The agency was already understaffed, so if you are cutting into it, you are already cutting into bone.”

Looking around for good things...
This is intriguing tech: A new, color-corrected flat lens, 10 centimeters wide but just 2.4 microns thick. Opens the door to a wide range of flat, lightweight optics. (Just imagine a flat space telescope.)

As February ends, we recognize #BlackHistoryMonth and highlight (just a few of) the amazing people who made significant contributions to science, engineering, and space exploration.
From top to bottom: George Carruthers, Katherine Johnson, Charles Bolden, Mae Jemison, and Beth Brown.
One welcome side effect of the rush of new robotic Moon missions is that we're getting some wonderful Earth footage along the way. This just in from Intuitive Machines' IM-2 "Athena."

The glaring conflict of interest declared by the authors of a paper on carbon capture that I just came across would be funny, if they hadn't declared it as nonexistent.
