Hint: you’re not an “ethical desktop experience” if you’re in bed with the world’s largest surveillance capitalist.

@aral
same counts for @fairphone since they ship their phones with mass survailience intecreated rather then #lineageOS or similiar.
their argument was that most people want and use #google and by adopting google nativly into their phone they can reach more people.

Meanwhile: my mom has no idea about tech and also no interest in. She has some enviormental motivations. So she bought the #fairphone. Now she sticks to google, not because she wanted it more, but because it was already installed...and now it's a habit.

What they could do instead:
offering google and lineage. having a good visable disclaimer on the google offer about them being a root kit leaving you no control over your phone.
By doing so I believe they could increase their outreach, especially since their is an increasing interest in service that respects private data.

@paulfree14 @aral They should probably just ship LineageOS only, with F-droid. Hire someone to maintain the Lineage build if necessary.

@paulfree14 @aral To be fair (😜), when @Fairphone started out, there were much less awareness around Google and surveillance capitalism in general. And to their credit, they made an effort early on to make it easy to install custom ROMs for those with the technical know-how. As a small start-up with a very specific mission, you kinda have to choose your battles.

Now that they have gained a following, it would be great to see them support and offer #lineageOS out of the box!

@rsolva
I really do understand the 'you must start somewhere' aproach. I'm also thankfull for what @Fairphone archieved, yet I got that response while there was already great awarness about googles mass survailience (obvious not enough yet) and fairphone 2 was already available.
@aral

@rsolva @paulfree14 @Fairphone It’s a bit more complicated than that. Been chatting to them since the early days. The person silently holding the purse strings doesn’t get the importance of free software. A lot of the folks working on it do. If it’s not free/open/private by default then it is not free/open/private period. 🤷‍♂️
