Aral Balkan

Privileged white guy who runs toot.community publicly declares “outrage culture is slowly taking over my Mastodon timeline… outrage about protests, police, climate, big tech… I don’t care.”

I call him out.

Other privileged white folks: “But did you hug him first? Discuss it over tea?”

Another Black man was just ruthlessly murdered by police in the US. Climate change is an existential threat. Big Tech is destroying democracy.

But you’re upset I didn’t coddle your fellow white guy?

Fuck you.

Apparently, Mastodon doesn't like Objects of type Image, so I'm adding some text here. My reply is just the image.

@aral
Mostly agree, but it's not "big tech", but "big money". It just happens these days that those are frequently linked, but look at Rupert Murdoch, the oil countries,... as counter evidences.
Just swept into my TL (German, sorry - with reference to French 😉):
twitter.com/AnnikaJoeres/statu
90% of daily media ww owned by just 9 billionaires.
That is what it is about.

Anteil steigend. Meine Analyse @zeitonline https://t.co/4TO0913MYX”

@aral Well said. At this point, we don't have time to fuck around. If you're not going to get on with the programme and "be part of the solution", I don't have to convince or convert you: just step aside and let the grown-ups (which actually include many, many kids, thankfully) do the work.

@aral This whole “no politics, please” shtick is the pinnacle of white middle, and upper class privilege. “Life is good for me, don’t you dare ruin my vibe with unpleasant reality.”

@schrotthaufen @aral Agreed, and it’s partly how one of my friendships deteriorated.

@megnconnors @schrotthaufen @aral I sometimes think that if we haven’t lost at least some friendships to challenging each other’s privilege, we’re not very good people. Or even friends…

@jpreisendoerfer @aral absolutely ok to punch Nazis. Punching Nazis is being gentler to Nazis than they are to others.

I once had a neighbor who was complaining about other neighbors who were putting up "Black Lives Matter" signs. He thought they should just shut up.

I replied that "Personally, I am a First Amendment type of guy. If people want to post things on their lawn, then they have every right to do that, even if someone else disagrees."

He muttered "so am I" and got my point, really quickly. He no longer says that sort of stuff, at least around me.

Why? Because I pointed out that his comments were inconsistent with his own values.

If you do that, it usually takes the wind out of the sails, and forces them to rethink their position and assumptions. They might not admit it to you right away, but it usually does make a difference.

But I am one of the few that go beyond calling out people's bullshit. I actually try to change their minds, if I can. But that is just me.

@aral My problem is that I don't have anywhere to go at this point that's not depressing. Peace doesn't seem to be changing anything, and I'm not about to go out and start killing the people who are making the world worse and seem to be immune to the justice system. It's not wrong to want to be happy for two seconds.

@Psychroclasm @aral let’s start with your neighbor. If you can make one person happy, that’s a Beginning. No?

@Psychroclasm Not at all. You have the tools to mute and block and filter.

What you’re saying is very different to publicly proclaiming “I don’t care” and attempting to shame those who do by accusing them of perpetuating “outrage culture”.

@aral
Big tech is is destroying democracy? Disagree....

@aral I’ve led a working class privileged white life! My blood is absolutely boiling over Tyre’s murder! And Breonna’s and so many more!!! These cops are cold blooded murderers! I just heard #ColinKaepernick is putting out an expose’ on Kevin McCarthy on Hulu!

@aral
The fact that they are more concerned about the feelings of a white man than the lives of thousands of African-Americans tells you everything you need to know about their "morals."

@aral I'm fine with outrage culture, because let's face it - lots of things are outrageous, and we should probably talk about them.

@aral "outrage culture???" There's Nazis out there man. Jfc. What a self-centered mega loser. 🥴

@aral Been there, done that, currently wearing the tee shirt to rags.

By nature, I am a bit of a people pleaser, so it can be stressful to be the one interrupting racism delivered in a tone of niceness. I’m getting better at it with practice, though.

And it’s always worth remembering that what’s considered polite has largely been framed as that which will not make those of us with privilege uncomfortable. That can include truth, and often does…

@aral IMO, there are two types of #anger.

There's anger that comes from a child/victim part of us - it's about our own 'stuff' (it's also part of being human and we can learn to manage it in healthy ways).

Then there's anger that comes from an adult part of us. That's about things that are unjust. It spurs us on to fight and create change. This type can also be called #outrage.

Sometimes, those two types can get a bit muddled. But all things considered, I'm 100% in favour of outrage culture

@aral coddle? Oh my goodness that is precious. As a white guy (boomer), I am appalled by how many of my white brothers and sisters are candy-ass snowflakes. Particularly when it comes to race and sex.

@aral I really hope they won't last long here. If they do, it won't be the same. Who's in charge here? Oh, we are. (What community? We can all avoid it like the plague).

@aral

toot.community is based in The Netherlands, and it sounds like that guy has his head buried to not recognize why people are upset with all the shit people should rightly be upset about.

Privileged, indeed.
