“Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres

un.org/sg/en/content/sg/speech

Israel is calling for his resignation for these remarks. Read his remarks for yourself. If those remarks are so unpalatable to Israel it is because Israel wants to commit genocide unhindered.

Fuck that. Never again doesn’t mean you get to do it this time.

@aral@ar.al Looks like the first link isn't working? Not sure if that's just me or its actually a bad link

They wouldn't have removed it would they???

@McNeely Fixed; thanks for the heads up. There was a bit of fluff in the original URL and I messed up removing it because text editing on phones :)

@aral I think Israel has been very clear.

@aral remind me when was last time Israel accepted any, even vaguely, critical comment to their actions?

@aral Really, they came 3000 terrorists and killed, raped, and murdered. Children, women, men, Muslims jews. They didn't care. Yet Israel is genocidal. Why?

@qballer Because one act of savagery does not justify another. This is not very difficult to understand unless you have a vested interest in not understanding it.

@aral So you expect us to go quietly into the night. Do you not understand that this will signal to Hamas that they can do this again? Hamas has been placing its people in harm's way. Only yesterday images of Gaza residents trying to flea for their lives who were gunned down by Hamas.

What would you do on the 7th of October?

@qballer No, I expect Israel to obey international law, to not dehumanise Palestinians, to not express genocidal intent and to not dole out collective pusnishment and kill thousands of civilians including thousands of children in what amounts to the human tragedy version of shooting fish in a barrel.

Thankfully, I am not the only one who feels that way either. The UN, human rights organisations like HRW and Amnesty, and – at this stage – anyone with a conscience, really, agrees.

@aral would you also be against UK bombing the germans in the 1940's?

@qballer It is unconscionable that you equate bombing Nazis – who were oppressing the Jewish people, as well as Roma, and other minorities – with the bombing of Palestinians who are being oppressed by Israel.

Had the UK occupied Germany for decades before bombing it? Had the UK implemented an apartheid system in Germany before bombing it? Had the UK encircled Germany, controlling every aspect of the lives of Germans for decades before bombing it?

False equivalency.

@aral
Israel isn't doing or wants genocide. Even as this happens people are discussing how to not stay in Gaza which we left in 2005.
Israel does what it does because Hamas and Phatach kill our people. The governing body of Gaza is hell-bent on killing all Jews. It states this goal. It is not our goal.

blogs.timesofisrael.com/dear-w

blogs.timesofisrael.comDear world: I don’t careI don’t care if you’re out on the street, waving your flag and chanting your slogans. We won’t die silently the way you want us to

@qballer Yes, that’s exactly the message I get when I hear “I don’t care.”

@qballer Yes, that much is clear.

@aral read the post you self-righteous idiot.

@qballer Or else what? You’ll bomb me too?

Goodbye.

@qballer @aral

“The slaughter of your innocent civilians is justified by the atrocities committed against mine” is a philosophy that makes no one safer and simply perpetuates violence in order to selfishly satisfy your personal, self-righteous sense of rage.

I hate Hamas to my core. I do not think that my hatred for them justifies committing war crimes just because it’s the easiest route to retaliation.

@tdverstynen @aral
So Hamas gets a pass because they target civilians in the most brutal way and we can't do anything? We remain defenseless. We have been doing that for 20 years. It didn't work out for us, we got the 7th. You know what here is a superpower. it's the 7th of October you are the head of state in Israel - what do you do? How do you protect your people? Why should people trust the government to keep them safe if you do nothing?

@tdverstynen @aral Imagine another thing 2 arab countries have a conflict. One does an operation of that size to another. What do you think will happen? The victim will do everything in its power to slaughter the other side. The world will say nothing because it's Arabs killing Arabs. Thats allowed. How do I know? This has happened before.

@qballer @aral

None of these rambling and incoherent rants even comes close to justifying war crimes. They’re just whataboutisms designed to deflect the point and make you feel better about not facing the true moral crisis at hand.

Pretty sad. That must be a hell of a headspace to be trapped in. I hope you find true moral clarity.

@tdverstynen @aral Bla bla bla. Don't defend your self israeli 0 go die peacefully. No, thank you.

Here is a simple question: it's the 7th of October what do you do? you are head of state. Your skin isn't in the game. No danger for you, easy to take moral high ground.

@qballer @aral

I tell you what I wouldn’t do. I wouldn’t rob my people of the sympathy they deserve from the international community by running headlong into an operation that commits mass atrocities against civilians because I am too lazy or enraged to deal with the complexities of the problem.

Yes, there is an irony of me saying this as an American. But in all fairness I protested the Iraq wars when our idiot right wing administration did the same thing.

@tdverstynen @aral |

How does it feel to be thousands of miles away with your neck not involved? If you knew what you were talking about, maybe I would listen. But you don't. On the plus side - you don't matter.

@qballer @aral

How does it feel to become the monster you proudly tell people that you fight against?

I hope that wallowing in your self righteous hatred at least brings you a little bit of solace. Because that’s the only possible good thing about it.

@tdverstynen @aral You assume far too much. Go away, run to your internet corner where your opinions are safe.

@qballer @aral

You can feel superior to me all you want. It means nothing except to gratify your own ego which it appears that you need right now.

Some day you may see that your positions have made you the monster that you purport to hate. I hope that you can forgive yourself if and when that happens.

@aral painfully self indulgent self righteousness bordering repugnant… his only justification is that Hamas is Gaza and Gaza is Hamas so they all need to die… it used to be Jewish ultranationalists that espoused this type of rhetoric, now it’s normal …

@szczur @qballer @aral @evelyn those thousands of Palestinian children might have been Hamas members tho

@nyx The surviving ones are definietly easier to recruit and brainwash into Hamas guerilla terrorists, considering how they witnessed so much death.

@qballer @aral @evelyn

@qballer @aral there is a big part of me that feels what this person writes in this post. Twisting to try accommodate everyone else's narratives and expectations is exhausting and just ignores *our* right to live in peace and safety.

@qballer @aral We don't want them to die, we want them to get of the Occupied Territories, as they promised to do 50 years ago. All their protestations ring hollow in light of that. Expanding settlements is not a way to earn my support. But he "doesn't care" for my support. Fine, one thing we can agree on.

@vvandinsky @aral there are many problems in Israel. People have a lot of criticism about the government. Israel is not without fault. There are normal Palestinian which just want to live. Hamas is causing this and no normal state can accept that. When the war is over most Israelies don't want to control the Gaza strip. We have no interest to control them. But no one can bare such an attack and not go to war.

@qballer @aral Don't ask me to pay for it as long as they are expanding settlements. And again, this guy has said he doesn't care what I think, so I'll return the favor.

@vvandinsky @aral I'm not expanding settlements nor do I vote for parties which do that. There is a question about the settlemens which requires dialog. That is something we can't do with Hamas.

@qballer @aral Sure, everybody is all "what, who me? I'm against expanding settlements, I'm in favor of Israel obeying international law." But there are never any consequences for them when they don't. They are acutely aware of the fact that there are never any consequences for anything they do, and they take full advantage of it. They don't need dialog to vacate the settlements, all they have to do is do it. If we don't impose consequences on them, then the only consequences they will feel will come from the likes of Hamas. That's on them, they have a choice.

@vvandinsky @aral You assume the settlers don't have claims over the land they live in. That is something they disagree. The courts haven't ordered all settlers to leave because of those claims out of them there is a very small extreme percentage that do illegal settle. They should be dealt with by court - which they are. You just don't know anything about anything.

@qballer @aral Nope, I assume that unless they get out of the Occupied Territories, I'm not going to support them. I don't owe them an explanation for that. I don't have to petition them for my non-support. You say you can't have a dialog with Hamas, but you can't have a dialog with Israel, either, because there are never any consequences for anything they do, so they have no incentive, they have no boundaries. They don't care what I think, because they get all the support they want without any strings attached. Until/unless that changes, they will continue to operate without boundaries.

@aral
Israel can not and should not allow this. You are effectively blaming me that Ham is hiding behind children.
