@aral My professional experience: In 2007 we've decided to switch for all our retail stores in Europe from unreliable HP deskjet printers (incl. expensive ink cartridges and Mafia-like methods like stop printing b/w, if just cyan ink was empty, automatically starting an expensive head cleaning procedure way too often, even when daily in use)
to Canon Pixma printers (cheap ink cartridges without chips) and around 2009 against Brother HL2040 b/w printers. They were so humble in terms of maintenance and spare parts, that we've saved a lot of money and incidents within a few years.
I no longer work there, but the brother printers still work there (15 years now).
