The fediverse is much more than what Mastodon (and most definitely Mastodon gGmbH) allows it to be.

Don’t let folks who see nothing wrong with getting into bed with a documented bad actor like Meta/Facebook limit the potential of this fledgling network for short-term dopamine hits from “number goes up!”

@aral What goes up must come down.

Which is why I relate to these lyrics:

🎶i don't care for nothing
that gets me too high
i want some dampened spirits
and black and bitter spoons
i'm not looking for reflection
i'm living on the moon🎶

@aral The big problem with Threads is that it's too big to fail. The same problem we have already in many places. If allowed in, they'll decide what can and cannot be shown. When they defederate with your instance, you'll be missing most people, and when they break rules you're not going to defederate them, because it's like sawing off the branch you're sitting on.

Break the link proactively to prevent them from getting to such a point.

@dascandy42 Oh, Peter, if you only knew how many times I’ve said almost exactly the same thing. Clearly either some folks aren’t listening or they think they’re special/clever/etc. enough to avoid the ramifications. (Or that the ramifications are worth whatever benefits a larger audience will bring.) :(

@aral Many people look at a slippery slope and think "Hey, that looks like a fun slope to go down! Wheeeee".

@aral

Even anti-authoritarians have *some* authorities they trust implicitly. It behooves us to think more critically about who we trust, and why, and update that list from time to time using new data. If you look to their historical behavior, you'll see why or why not you should trust them. Every time.

I find it super strange that people on a network built out of distrust for big-tech centralization would default to trust the same institutions. After all we've been through!

@dascandy42

@dascandy42 @aral I tried to check if my server is letting threads in, but I couldn't find it. Anybody know about @zeroes ?

@dascandy42 @aral
Between the users, the protocol, and the app, I am skeptical that Meta product culture groks microblogging to reach “most people”

@aral well, there are thousands of Mastodon servers deciding freely their moderation policy about that. And they use Mastodon software also freely.
