well, I will say so far my self hosting has gone rather well, but admittedly I'm a control freak and maybe the type of self hosting I'm doing isn't for everyone. I've also had to learn a lot about firewalls, DMZs, better security, and while that's probably good in terms of internet security...
If you're not a control freak like I am (never cook with me 
I'm awful) there's definitely easier self host options which I'm sure you're aware of
@aral@mastodon.ar.al I can't quite decide if Gargamel is naive or doing this stuff on purpose. Capitalists do know how to convince people (that's basically their only skill, actually. Either with rhetoric or with money).
I do know it absolutely does not matter because the impact will be negative regardless of his intentions.

@aral I’m hoping someday we will be able to self-host a mastodon instance on our phones. That would really be decentralization.
@1ll173r47 Mastodon isn’t designed for that. It uses a Big Tech stack. But you will be able to do that with Small Web places.
