When the internet goes down forever we’ll all have time to weigh wether we wielded it wisely
@aral I thought I was having local issues. damn
@aral Living a fantasy trope - kill the leader and all the minions fall to the ground.
@aral always has bing.
@tomstoneham @aral @Mojeek reportedly their servers are a bit overloaded right now because of all the people just now finding out about them.
@tomstoneham @aral @Mojeek yeah, but the index is not good at all… I can never find anything
@tournesol @aral @tomstoneham got any examples there so we can look into them?
@Mojeek @aral @tomstoneham I don’t know, just now I searched for "pears project git" and didn’t found found a trace of "github.com/PeARSearch"
@tournesol @aral @tomstoneham so that page is in the index: https://www.mojeek.com/search?q=site%3Agithub.com+Pearsearch
Mojeek clusters by default (see more results under each host to keep variety on page), with pear being something that's on Git quite a lot it's a difficult match.
Will add it to our feedback board to see if anything is amiss.
@Mojeek @tournesol @aral @tomstoneham Seems to me like something like detecting the "git" keyword and returning results with popular Git hosting sites for it could improve the situation.
@Mojeek
Tried again your service earlier today. I made this search:
https://www.mojeek.com/search?q=spinergie&client=ff_android
I was expecting this result on the first page, if not the first result:
https://www.spinergie.com/
I’m sorry but in this situation I will go back to another service.
@tournesol @aral @tomstoneham
@canard164 @tournesol @aral @tomstoneham looks like a stemming issue, will raise it, thanks
@canard164 @tournesol @aral @tomstoneham from my view spinergie should be on the front page, can I check where you're searching from so I can look into it?
@Mojeek
Tried just now and it’s not working. I am searching from France; is that the information you need?
@canard164 @tournesol @aral @tomstoneham result 4 repeating your search with the location set to france should be spinergie.com
(it's been raised as the ie is a better match than the y which is up top)
@Mojeek
I set the location to France but it still doesn’t work. spinergie.com is not in the first page.
@tournesol @aral @tomstoneham
@canard164 @tournesol @aral @tomstoneham Is your language set to French? Just to check as there are two different things that are issues here which we're looking to solve
@Mojeek
OS in French, browser in French, everything in French.
@tournesol @aral @tomstoneham
@aral oh no TIL
I was wondering about that. Refuse to use google.
@aral startpage.com is google :)
@aral +1 for metager
@aral
Oh for the days when Metacrawler did what it said on the tin: rather than having an index of its own, it instead searched everyone else (AltaVista, WebCrawler, InfoSeek, Lycos, HotBot, Excite, Yahoo - probably also a bunch of others I can't remember from the late 1990s) and collated their results...
@aral interesting, nice find. I was just running into this too, assumed it was a problem with my connection. I’m gonna reach out to DDG because I’m most surprised this is a breaking issue for them; I wonder just how much of their search is Bing?
@aral "always has Bing"
@tansy *badum tush* :)
@aral this explains a lot tbh. I am getting increasingly tired of the internet.
@aral Kagi still works
@aral StartPage still works though ... except maybe for images idk
@aral It looked to me that bing.com was up before the others.
But perhaps that was some sort of fallback site. Because I think it looked simpler than it normally does.
@aral @Faintdreams Kagi will net you a free 100 searches I think. don’t know how it is?
@aral Good post, very poignant.
Particulary egregious when I found out about Ecosia, basically greenwashing their business by offlshoring their search engine work to dirty Bing servers.
@aral Ecosia became one of the options on iOS a couple of years ago. Some people have recommended Swisscows (also Bing). Brave Search... well, what can we say. It's all getting a bit depressing...
https://www4.bing.com/
GL..
Found this on bleepingcomputer it’s basic search not sure of ai. Read whatever sorry the others aren’t up night!
@aral I just checked it is still happening! I was trying to search something from my laptop ~30 min ago and I almost posted a
@aral If I'm not wrong these services just handle the client side differently. They probably source results from the same place but minimizes personal data collection and telemetry provided to the corporations running the service.
@aral it's hosted on one of the big cloud providers. What's that got to do with Bing?
Kind of ironic, that I see your post, as this morning this is what DuckDucks do:
@aral Pretty much my morning
@aral glad I moved to Kagi
