Aral Balkan

I love how we inhabit a world where the majority of people live according to the dictates of a magic invisible sky fairy and yet feel competent to pass judgement on the mental wellbeing of others.

@aral Health and truth are distinct, and predators don't need to understand their prey beyond figuring out how to hunt them.

@aral One of the reasons I've been quite proud on the situation of "Church vs ..." in Czechia. Effectively 77.9% of people don't sign up for any religion.

@aral Also, most of the books written about the magic sky fairies say life is hard, be kind. They use it to murder everyone with a different read of the books.

Then people wonder why aliens won't contact us.

@greenWhale Oh, nothing in particular… just musing.

@aral Reminder: the follower gets to decide what the sky fairy wants.

@aral It’s really disappointing to get this periodic reminder that, no matter how good I ever get at following the tenets of love & understanding in my religion, atheists will just sneer and dismiss me with “magic sky fairy”.

@naptowncode Love and understanding don’t require religion, they require humanity.

And I’m no more an atheist than I am an abatmanist. (I don’t define myself by the fact that I don’t believe that this storybook character or that is real.)

@aral I never said religion is required to be a good person. I’m just annoyed that I can live up to your stated ideas of a good person and still be an object of your contempt.

@naptowncode I never said it’s impossible to be a good person despite religion. It just takes a lot of work to creatively reinterpret/ignore/reject all the horrible bits.

@aral I don’t agree that my religion is a collection of horrible bits. And it’s tiresome to be told that again and again, as I often am working in tech, especially by people I want to respect.

Sometimes it feels like that’s just my lot, unless I want to hide away that part of me or play the role of “one of the good ones”.

@aral and almost everyone lives according to the dictates of a magic invisible hand and it isn't even the fairy's hand
