Excellent! We all know rapid growth = success (hey, if it works for cancer…) and, please, do ensure you sniff each and every tech bro brain fart before trying non-corporate alternatives. https://social.heise.de/@heiseonlineenglish/113483702634402329
@aral here comes the clone army. Defederate.
@aral Yes, the religion of growth based economics is a cancer.
The cultural disease is terminal https://autcollab.org/2024/11/10/healing-resisting-internalised-ableism/.
The WEIRD indoctrination system makes sure that all children are indoctrinated in Homo Economicus® from a very young age, before we learn anything substantial about Gaia and the living world. This is possibly the most cruel, dehumanising, and life denying part of WEIRD cultures.
WEIRD cultures. Brilliant. And so, sadly, true.
About the economic system, I've got some references to it in the article I'm writing about whether parents should be paid.
I love your articles by the way! What I'm actually doing is hunting for that page you sent me some time ago, to read - and finding lots of other treasure, instead!
@aral I, for one, find that the millions people I interact with directly every day here on Mastodon are sufficient for me. The extra couple millions on BlueSky aren't necessary to improve my life.
@unexpectedteapot @aral are you saying that rich people shouldn't just make more money at the expense of all life on earth? how dare
@scrum @unexpectedteapot I know, right, what was I thinking :)
@unexpectedteapot @aral Have to agree with society on this one. If global population continues to grow then the global economy needs to grow to accomodate everyone earning a living.
Also growth doesn't always mean consuming more resources. If you use the existing resources more efficiently then you can experience growth with the same input resources via productivity increases.
@steeznson @unexpectedteapot @aral but what you're describing is growth to meet new conditions, not "growth for growth's sake".
@Mabande @unexpectedteapot @aral Yeah I probably accidentally deployed a strawman there because often people online seem to be against the concept of growth altogether (for some puzzling reason). Wasn't expecting a more nuanced take! I think I agree with you.
@steeznson Glad to hear it :)
@unexpectedteapot @aral you don't understand, if number doesn't go up then I can't just sit on my ass with my stocks magically going up in price infinitely as a means of income, and if they don't go up faster every year I'll never have a raise! billionares deserve raises too!
@aral I'm kinda impressed with the angle there: bluesky, funded by millions in VC cash and with a dedicated pr staff has after three years reached the same numbers as the fedi, funded by the mental health of enthusiasts, and that's a fantastic success?
Maybe it could be interesting to report on that bsky's cost per user this far is way above one dollar, fedi's is a fraction of that.
@aral@mastodon.ar.al The annoying thing is I also seen FediBros thinking Mastodon is on same competing level as BlueSky or Thread which felt so forced. I like to think of it as it in their own lane and it not going to please everyone as most average Joe just want the feeling of Twitter without Elon Musk and BlueSky is the closest they get to it
