@aral It's not publicized at all, but I notice that local councils here are also preparing for deadly heat waves.
@aral We can't give up. It's too late not to fight. Let this radicalize you instead of lead you to despair
@scott @aral so much this. I’ve heard from climate scientists that every 0.1 degree that we can stop is important.
It might not seem like it. Hell, a COUPLE DEGREES may not *seem* important, but we’ve gotta listen to our science.
The vast, vast majority of climate researchers have taken great care to do accurate work, and they are telling us this matters. I know it.
Oligarchs OTOH think that they can hide from climate disaster. They’re smaller than they think
I hope we’re not headed for 3.0C, but if we are, even making it 2.9C instead would save so many lives! In that sense it’s never too late. But it’s definitely too late for business as usual—for accepting the bullshit that fossil fuel companies and their investors and enablers in politics want to sell us.
'The banking industry can support the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy but capital will only move "at scale when the economics make sense."'
The punchline here is that the economics of reversing climate change — which will likely take centuries — means degrowth.
Or at least that's what I'm coming to understand from the brightest minds on the subject.
If someone had figured out how to *really* monetize stopping 3C warming, then we'd be stopping it.
@aral
Banks aren't the only ones who should be preparing.
So humanity doesn't go extinct we need:
1. Replacing GDP with a better metric.
2. Less fragile technology.
3. Scenario planning to handle a population crash to a sustainable level.
4. Better post-crash strategic spatial planning.
5. Sustainable agriculture.
6. Attitudes and ongoing education that incorporate natural custodianship.
7. More grassroots organizing to establish green political leadership worldwide.

@JeffC1956 @aral I would also like less nanoplastics in my brain please!
@mikemccaffrey @JeffC1956 What are you, a communist? :)
@aral "an international banking group have quietly concluded that climate change will likely exceed the Paris Agreement's 2 degree goal and are examining how to maintain profits"
@aral these people are just unbelievably horrible
@aral And I guess they are all investing in those sectors that are destroying our planet. Somehow they think money is more valuable than the survival of humanity. What are they going to do with all their money when we all become extinct? Sounds like a crap business model.
@aral '"Nobody wants to be seen as going against" the administration's pro-fossil-fuel energy policy'
Yes, I mean who'd want to be seen as the sane one in the room?
Anyway, what's with the magazine name, *Scientific* American ? Is that still allowed with the current regime?
