The homeless university lecturer: ‘There’s a sense of shame around it’
True. If this sort of thing happens in your so-called “first world” country, you should feel a profound sense of shame about it. It shows that your society is failing.
With the levels of wealth and technology we have in countries like Ireland, having homelessness is a choice. We’ve chosen cruelty. We’ve said we’re ok with it. So yes, we should definitely be feeling ashamed.
You know who is the last person who should feel ashamed? A homeless person whom we have failed as a society.

It is the 200 year old con: ever since the maturation of the industrial revolution we have been tricked into being slaves to rich people.
Grow the economy my arse. The size of the economy is measured by how rich rich people are. Negative inflation is better for everyone: ***it is not a bad thing***.

@aral funny how it happens to women over 50. I'm 56, I've been stuck adjuncting for 5 years, teaching political science and economics. Because no one will hire me to do *anything* else.

Universities have (largely) become an industry mass-producing something labelled "higher education".
Today's universities are very different from what universities were until about a century or so ago.
A Ph.D. degree has lost much of its value compared to that time.
A master's degree has lost most of its value.
A bachelor's degree has lost all of its value.
There isn't a simple explanation why all of that has happened, let alone in one sentence.
