AI won’t be killing us. People using AI will be killing us. (They already are but it’s only Brown people in the Middle East being murdered so polite white folks in the West couldn’t care less right now. They will soon.)
Death by AI doesn’t have to be by drone strike. In the West, it’ll be forced deportations to concentration camps in foreign soils, denied benefits, denied healthcare, and the social ostracism of those flagged as “undesirable” to the point of making it impossible for them to make a living and survive. (See also: cashless society.)
@aral <Sigh> Why do the uber-rich despise us so much?
@aral @platypusparent The cashless society will take a set-back, of course, when Russia escalates the infrastructure cyberattacks in the run-up to open war and takes down the retail EPOS terminals (as their APT teams are already doing right now to the likes of M&S and the Coop).

@aral in the US it's already the case that you can be knocked at any time into bureaucratic hell with no escape and the only way out is often the help of one underpaid overworked civil servant who takes pity on you. can't wait until all their decades of navigating & understanding the brutality of the system is turned into an unknowable blob of statistical language that doesn't feel like it owes anyone any explanation
@aral and don't forget the other "death by AI" which is the climate change the usage of AI causes. Again, right now mostly happening in the global south to people of color, but the issues climate change causes are getting closer and closer to the polite white folks.
@aral can’t pick up your prescription because your face looks like a shoplifter’s to the loss-prevention software
@airshipper @aral or you're wearing a mask, because still no-one made it safe to not do so
@aral
All they need to do is put travel and benefits behind an AI service gate that rejects anyone they find undesirable. Then anyone outside the system starves.
Bureaucracy does this at fraction of the speed that AI can.
Yeah everybody's looking for the Terminator but the Tin Reaper will look more like an empty stomach and an eviction notice.
