I’m sorry to post a link to surveillance capitalist YouTube but you need to watch this speech by Hannah Gadsby in full. In under eight minutes, not only does she give a masterclass in intersectional feminism but also a biting critique of the hypocrisy at the heart of neoliberalism.

(Please visit the link below in a separate browser in incognito mode if possible, it leads to YouTube, an unsafe site.)

m.youtube.com/watch?v=OEPsqFLh

@aral

Alternatively you can view it on invidious ( invidio.us ) which doesn't track you, simply replace all the youtube or youtu.be stuff with invidio.us, you can keep the unique video identifier though.

So m.youtube.com/watch?v=OEPsqFLh becomes invidio.us/watch?v=OEPsqFLhHBc

Hope this helped!

True, and if you're on Desktop then FreeTube ( github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTub ) is another good alternative too for watching videos, it lets you subscribe without an account too!

@UnclearFuture
hey, just what I was looking for, on mobile I use skytube, now I can have freedom on desktop too!
@aral @krozruch @el_joa

@UnclearFuture @el_joa @krozruch @aral I love FreeTube. It has a few bugs, but it's such a nice software.

@elliot231 @el_joa @krozruch @aral

Well, it is still beta, so, kinda expected to have bugs, but yeah, it's nice :)

@UnclearFuture @el_joa @krozruch @aral Great to have another alternative:) Thanks for mentioning it, hadn't heard of this.

@el_joa @UnclearFuture @aral Recently discovered it, though I have to first know it's useful so view it elsewhere first.

@krozruch @el_joa @aral

Oh, quick tip I learned, if you like full 1080p then you can download the video and audio seperately and then stitch them together with ffmpeg using the following command:

ffmpeg -i video_file -i audio_file -c copy output_file_name

also, if you need subtitles youtube-dl --all-subs is useful, which then you can weave into the above outputted file too:

ffmpeg -i file -i subtitle_file -c copy output_file :)

@UnclearFuture @krozruch @el_joa @aral You can download and mux audio and video at the same time with youtube-dl. Try youtube-dl -f 137+140 url to get 1080+aac for instance.

@el_joa @krozruch @UnclearFuture@mastodon.starrevolution.org @aral @yosl has written a Signal bot that uses youtube-dl to automatically post info about youtube videos posted in group chats on Signal. Also does Twitter & most news sites.

@el_joa @krozruch @UnclearFuture @aral I use youtube-dl a lot to keep a local collection of videos I like. I highly recommend it, despite the name it also supports other sites like vimeo and twitter.

A friend of mine did an automated download of all youtube videos in his firefox history, I think by dumping the sqlite database that contains firefox's history. Should be only a couple of lines of shellscript.

@UnclearFuture
Well, it does not proxy the video which is still loaded directly from googlevideos.com CDN, so you'll at least leak your IP.
Still better than using YouTube directly though
@aral

@ck @aral

Ah, right, thank you for the information :).

True, better than using it directly!

@UnclearFuture Ah, thank you; I was trying to remember the name of that site. Appreciate it :)

@UnclearFuture @aral whoa, invidio.us is open source! github.com/omarroth/invidious and even lets people find mirrors that exist on peertube via a plugin: gitlab.com/Ealhad/peertubeify

This is impressive.

@aral   https://shitposter.club/attachment/2751614 I downloaded and converted it, try and see if this file is happy in Mastodon, it was a little difficult getting the file size down.
@moonman @aral Speak outloud the name of KRISHNA and google "Science of Self Realization online" and click the first link, the vedabase dot com one. You can read the book for free online and it will give you transcendental knowledge of God and how to attain liberation so you can be free.

I'm a little sorry for so far only talking about tech stuff in the replies here; I did (before replying) watch that speech and agree that it's very well invested 8 Minutes!

Thanks for sharing, @aral , I wouldn’t have come across it otherwise!

@el_joa @aral

I apologise too, I agree, it's a very good video and people should definitely watch it!
