@aral @mrundkvist I think Elsevier has followed the general path of enshittification? Started 140± years ago as a scholarly publishing house, and slowly morphed into a primarily profit driven enterprise over the last few decades..
@aral @mrundkvist Very much this. Their practices have always been predatory and abusive. The scientific community puts up with it because getting published is required for funding in many cases.
