Weekly GNU-like #MobileLinux Update (13/2025): Crossing Platforms, Breaking Barriers
@postmarketOS As daily driving a phone with #PostmarketOS I can't thank you enough folks for all the efforts so far !
I'll be talking about #postmarketOS at the next Portland Linux/Unix Group (PLUG) meeting on Thursday April 3rd, come on down if you're in the area

I submitted a merge request to #AlpineLinux aports to get #TouchpadEmulator added. This program allows touchscreen devices to control a mouse cursor for easier use with desktop-oriented user interfaces. Merge request here:

Testers on #postmarketOS welcome, you can test with:
sudo mrtest add -a 82061
also add yourself to input group to avoid the password prompt. You can also set it to autostart with LaunchTouchpadEmulator.sh --autostart
The Pine Phone Pro arrived earlier this week. After a few unfocused, false starts I finally got it booting into Gnome on PostmarketOS and currently installing Waydroid over ssh.
My wife uses a cheesey coupon clipping app (iOS/Android) for doing the groceries and such. I'll need to take a look at what traffic flows in-n-out of this app to see what is being farmed and segregate/container off if required.
We are heavy Signal users but I may use this as an excuse to set up a XMPP server. Twas on the 'roadmap'.
Initial impressions are good. Definitely not as shiny and smooth as an iOS or Android device but - it's a phone. We spent half our lives with dumb rotary dialing doohickeys - we'll survive. lol
Pretty impressed with Gnome on a touch device so far. This is my first real experience with it. No 'klunkiness' so far but just scratching the surface.
It will be interesting to see how a non-technical person takes to it. I'm going to monkey with it myself for the first week or so to find the hard edges to save her the frustration.
I want to experiment with Android Auto - see what (if anything) is possible.
I also obtained a Seeed Studio Sensecap T1000-E (meshtastic, lora, etc.) to connect to this device. We'll see how far I get with that.
I really need a staff... Ha!
Big problem I see coming to #linuxmobile is overlapping gestures of the shell and the app.
On IOS and Android the top and bottom of the screen are always used for the mobile interface, so apps can make use of the sides.
How do we work around the issue of apps not being able to rely on side gestures on linux mobile?
I've seen apps with side swipe gestures also use a button at the top left corner which helps.
Should apps design with side gestures by default?
@penguin86 I’ve been meaning to power up my #developer phones and tinker around with #PostmarketOS again, now that it’s been awhile…
I thought #gnome #mobile looked slick as is last time I flashed it, and now I can’t wait to see how things have improved!
Tried the #OnePlus 6T camera in #OBS and it works! Cannot select resolution and the default is pretty small and zoomed in, but frame rate is smooth. Might be another way to record video with #postmarketOS!
Front camera is still very purple. Unfortunately, having two Pipewire sources active simultaneously (to see both cameras at once) does not seem to work. They both just freeze.
