You think Mastodon.social getting denial of service attacked is something? I just denial of service attacked myself again.

If you see this, it’ll mean the Sidekiq queue has likely cleared. The last post I made three hours ago hasn’t gone through yet.

Something tells me there should be a different queue for posts you make, no?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, read this, about the last time it happened: ar.al/2022/11/09/is-the-fedive)

@aral If the problem is that your 22k followers spawn 3k jobs per interaction, wouldn’t smaller instances make the problem worse? If you follow this decentralization to its conclusion, won’t every interaction spawn 22k jobs?

@adam Yep. The point is that the technical design of Mastodon/ActivityPub favours centralisation. It is designed around Big Tech principles and thus inherits its scaling characteristics and success criteria. This is the exact same design flaw that saw the Big Web coalesce into a handful of trillion-dollar monopolies. The only way of slowing this down I see is social pressure but that will likely only go so far even if exerted. This is why I’m working on the as a potential alternative.
